I was hoping to add this to the "HBC Official Predator Thread" but it seems like no one has started one yet???

Finally had a chance to get out for a hike to burn some calories and conduct a little "dog patrol".

Couple hundred yrds from the truck I could hear some ravens making some good noise so I headed that direction and found this.

Not much left of the carcass but there were lots of dog tracks in the area so I hiked another couple hundred yrds and set up on a steep hillside in the trees above some nice terrain.

I grabbed my cow/calf elk call and wailed out a couple of series of fawn-in-distress calls. About 10 mins later I saw 3 yotes come in from my left. The only problem was that they were on the wrong side of a fence on private property.
I sat motionless but one was very intent on looking my way and another bedded down with a good vantage point.
I figured the best thing to do was to wait them out (I sure wished I had a decoy). After several minutes they milled about and then wandered slowly back from where they came.
After another few minutes I could hear some crunching and then 2 whities appeared directly below me. I thought this might be my lucky break.
Sure enough the trio of yotes could also hear them and made their way around the fence and I stopped the first one with some lip-squeaks. The mighty .270 roared and the other two bolted back into thick cover.
Immediately, I grabbed my howler and went crazy with some coyote-in-distress calls. After a couple of minutes I belted out a challenge howl.
Sure enough one of the yotes came back and was headed directly at me but was looking down below at his fallen comrad. As soon as hit the first opening he was down! I didn't get the triple but was happy with the double....although I was a little disappointed with the damage with one pelt:shock:.

Was a great Okanagan winter day!

I headed further south but wasn't able to put any more dogs to sleep although I did manage to call in what I "think" was a wolf. He came in silently and departed and I didn't know he was there until the tracks told me otherwise.

Now get out there and go for a hike on winter range!!

Awesome job; weve got a real problem with the yodies right now. Not enough guys are cleaning them out. Further to that landowners are not letting us do what needs to be done. In Vernon this year they had regional district meeting concerning too many yodies and instead of letting hunters do the job they decided to spend our money on making signs to let the public know how they should protect themselves. More bs; the yodies population is out of control and this spring were gonna lose alot of fawns. Lots of people have already lost pets and the next news headline is gonna be a child if were not careful. How can we make the public aware and landowners open to letting us get at em.

Yappy dogs sure are active at this time of year.
I tried this a.m. but picked a poor spot and tourists showed up early.

I didn't get out there until noon yesterday... Later than I had hoped.

Funny...... just after all the comotion of gunshots, yotes-in-distress, howling and snarling yotes......I heard a distant yell as someone was desparately trying to call their dog back to them:mrgreen:.

Scare will be good for them, need to keep a handle on their pooch.

Have you gone to a spot and howled in the evening to judge a spot for an a.m. set-up ?
Or just locate whenever convenient?

While I have done some night howling, it was only for fun and practice. Never made it back for the morning.

This area always holds coyotes. Lots of whities and dogs.

Areas adjacent to canyons seem to be good spots.

Hope all you shed hunters out there are packing some calls and heat:).

Geeze, you could have at least taken the leash off the one dog before the pic was taken.

Hahah....these two had no collars, no licenses, were off leash and were thinking about running deer. I had to bring them in to the pound:wink:.
