I've looked at that pic over and over Kelly, and for the life of me I can't figure out what the hell that bird was doing.

are almost all Brants banded? it seems there is a good chance of shooting a banded one

Crazy_Farmer
02-20-2011, 03:27 PM
There was a time when they made a major effort to band them all. Something like 1 in 13 at one point were banded, a lot of those were doubled banded aswell. Black brant that is. Now they still do lots of projects up in Alaska but that number is much much lower now.

fowlweather
02-20-2011, 03:54 PM
k it is still a much larger number than ducks and geese am i right?

Crazy_Farmer
02-20-2011, 03:59 PM
I guess it all depends on luck. I know guys who shot the most brant out there last season and didnt get a single band. And others getting a couple. Its plain and simple luck.

Rough numbers have always been 1 in 300 for ducks and 1 in 200 for geese. But it just has to do with the area you hunt in. Some places either band locally so early and late you'll get those birds or whereever they are during the spring they get banded, like Alaska during their molt.

Luck and numbers is all.
