Up in the grasslands around the loops and came across this.
Anyone know what it's for?

Leaving something like that out there with seven years imprisonment stamped on it just begs for removal!

I'm betting it's for a survey of some sort.

Sounds about right for our government.
2 years for murder and 7 years for removing a survey tool

$34 was burried there in 1918, and you'll go to jail for 7 years if you steal it. Jelvis's bank account?

Is this around Kissick? Perhaps it marks the prices of lots that the gov't could resell because the army drafted every last man for WW1, all of which died in France, killing the town.

It's a geodetic survey benchmark... they are all over the place if you keep your eyes peeled. The locations are all published.

Send the photo to our local museum, it'd be kind of neat to find out exactly what it's for. It's a survey pin of some kind, but the marking's are pretty wild! I found one up in the Sikanni River, towards the Mountains years ago, I think I took a picture of it, I'll see if it looks like this one.

I think its a capped iron post used to survey property lines. I'm looking for one that's supposed to be on my property.

Great idea, I'll do that and see what they say:)

Bingo
think they are similar or the same as Datum points.

It is a bench mark, only I don't think Geodetic. It appears to be a property corner the that intersects four land titles. The lines stamped are approximate boundary directions and numbers between the lines are lot or land title numbers.

In the survey biz they call it a CIP, capped iron pin. They are typically set at major proper corners, all Reserve and federal lands are marked like this at every property corner, many are set in concrete posts.

That's a nice clear picture. I too believe that it is a property survey marker. The $7; $8; $9 and $10 probably denote sections (640 acres) from the pin center.
Some people use them for geocaching. You can get more informationon that at this link.

CL means center line, I was thinking the SL means straight line maybe?

In front of the 4 numbers is an S with a L through it.
There's no CL but I just use that for marking out the center of something sometimes, with leads me to believe SL might be something similar...

Nowadays-
From The Criminal Code(1970) Section 399
Every one(except a registered land surveyor) who willfully pulls down, defaces, alters or removes a boundary mark lawfully placed by a land surveyor is guilty of an indictable offence & is liable to imprisonment for 5 years.

So if I find a legal way to get a land surveyor to hang my NO TRESPASSING signs, and then find some jerk pulling them down, the jerk can possibly go to jail??? I like this.

I totally missed the "L". Not sure what that means.

If you look at the link Matty posted for the Gabriolalan, you can see that one marked "NW¼" etc. I think they mean a ¼ section, but the marker there is stamped 2002. So, was a section of land divided into four 160 acre parcels or some meteric equivalent?

In Matty's photo, it appears that the center of the lines has been drilled. Maybe it has been checked.

I would be interested if Matty has the coordinates and cares to post them.

No surveyors on this site?
