Show off your Duck Mounts

I had such a great time during my first waterfowl season this year, I cant wait for many more! And I would be interested in a mount or two in my future.

I'd love to see pictures of your mounts, so please post pics of your beauties and if you don't mind include what the mount cost you and where you had it done. I would like to get an idea of what type of price tag I'd be looking at and who out there does a good job.

Awesome! Nice work Crazy.. you do your own mounts right? I was looking at some mounts on another forum too... this fellow has over 750 mounts in trophy room http://www.duckhuntingchat.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=73&t=96960 I see you have lots of dead mounts, I think my first mount will be in flight, maybe cupped to land... but I guess it depends on the bird. I do like the dead mounts though, very nice.

Im not sure what I will want to get mounted. I really would love to take a drake pintail. I shot several hens this season but no drakes, the only one that I had a good shot at I just sat and watched it fly right by my face - head level about 15 yards away... what a gorgeous bird! I was so enamored by its beauty I didn't even feel bad just watching it fly by and not take a shot.

Im also thinking that just a beautiful drake mallard would be nice. I took a beautiful banded one as my last duck of the season this year but one of its wings was totally screwed, almost separated at the joint and tons of feathers missing. That bird made me work for it, I shot just as he was turning away, he came down about 40 yards away from where I hit him, swam about 20 yards through the puddle and got up and started running across the field, no joking I measured it on google earth, I had to run almost 180 meters to get him. I was mind boggled that a duck could run that fast lol.

I saw this mount on another forum as well and thought it was a fantastic position and cleverly mounted so it really looks like it's in flight. Not sure my girlfriend would want a duck centerpiece though lol http://www.duckhuntingchat.com/forum/download/file.php?id=17984

Also, anyone have any suggestions for freezing a bird I want to have mounted and field care? what about blood... do you guys clean it in the field at all? If there is a lot of blood on the bird, but little damage is the bird a write off for mounting?

A good taxidermist blood is nothing. I always try to clean it best as possible becuase the better condition your bird shows up at the taxidermist the better result you should have I think. A feather here or there shouldn't matter. They can be hidden but majors like some primary wing ones can hurt if you want an inflight mount. Also a good taxidermist after thawing the bird should tell you if how you wanted it won't be as nice as a different position becuase of wing damage or something else.

All my mounts are from two guys. Stopped using one becuase of cost to quality ratio. Far too much for okay quality. New guy is the same quality as last but far far cheaper. I'm gonna gonna do my own taxidermy in the offseason. Try my hand at it and see if I can get good at it.

Also all my birds I've just cleaned little wet cloth got all the feathers right and then wrapped in plastic bags taped up. Some guys put in nylon leggings. I know a few taxidermists who don't recommend it but I did it once and it never hurt it. You can go to an extreme and make a cardboard cutout, lay the bird on it and very carefully vacuum wrap it. This is good for birds with long tails, pinnies, old squaws. The tail feathers can't be bent if you do it this way.

Becuase I know what prices top taxidermist charge in the states, I wouldnt pay a cent over 200-300 for a duck up here done by most guys in the lower mainland. 400 for a goose is a normal average but I know guys charge alot more for subpar work in BC.

So just try to gently clean off any blood with a damp cloth or wet one or something in the field? and then gently wrap it in plastic and freeze it. Sounds simple enough.

When the time comes I will have to ask around for good taxidermists in the lower mainland. I had a fish done by a fantastic female taxidermist in Ontario once, she's well known and has many awards for her work and fish are her specialty. She went to school for art and was short one class, thought hey taxidermy... thats weird and cool so she took it to fill a slot, ended up excelling in it and that's what she went into. Her husband eventually ended up quitting his job and working for her, he did all mount bases and backers etc. I paid close to 300 for that fish, 39-1/2" muskie, not anything special but I was a kid and it was my first muskie... had sentimental value and I'm glad I have it. I was hoping that I could get a duck done for something in the 200-250 range, so it's good to know that its not an unrealistic hope.

This big boy is a beast! Probably our biggest mallard ever here on the island! Shot by my dad on December 29th 2005 with my grandfathers hand made 50+ year old double bbl at Cowichan Bay Estuary. The bird has really nice full colours aswell.

I have a euro widgeon being made that I shot last year. Practically no body damage so it should turn out nice. I will hopefully see it late March.

I'd like to mount one of those 14 lbs honkers!! I think that would be cool!! Especially in a back-peddling position. Would have to find a big enough wall though. ;)

This is the Sprig pintail I managed with Elkhound and Dutchie one day over on the other side.

Looks great Marc, I love the drake pintails... I was out at lunch today doing recon on fields in prep for late goose which is rapidly approaching us (Im struggling to get silhouettes painted in the non existent spare time I have) and I saw a wack load of Pintails in a flooded field today... very cool to watch.

The Pintail is definitely a high competitor for my first mount choice.

Ya I like them with yellowish heads just like mallards with green heads.
