I dont know about how much snow you have in W.Lk ,but back here in A.B , I would guess 20-24" . There is not much room left , between the houses to throw what gets shovelled off the driveway & Walkways..
Anyway on with the Spring Grizzly Stories......

it is my considered opinion I need more drugs.

HOWEVER back to grizzly hunters the snow conditions are THE ABSOLUTE best in 30 years! lots of the deep white stuff..that is important because it helps keep the Bears in predictable areas. Especially on the Cariboo Mountains, and even on the coastal mountains the Bears will den up on the South side of the mountain, slopes up high, when the snow starts to melt its the opening bell for spring feeding season and these mighty Giants merely need to go straight downhill still groggy and sleepy and grumpy from a long hibernation. Two of their first foods they must have, must have are fiddlehead and skunk cabbage these grow in low lying swampy areas with an accumulation of standing water and this provides the drug that removes the butt plug from the Bears rectum, allowing it to voraciously feed morning to night.

The snow also forces bears into very predictable feeding patterns and locations these are so predictable that they can be spotted on Google Earth without any experience at all. Be looking at south facing slopes. These south facing slopes get the warm spring rays of the sun heating them up and allowing for slide conditions, and we've also seen that this is been one of the worst years for slide so far in the mountains. Once the south facing slope slide they start to green up and that's where the Bears will be, by careful attention to wind direction and thermal current, that's the heating of the air by the sun and moved by hot air rising from first light to about 10 AM and then the reverse comes to in the afternoon when thermal currents will push the cold air down to the valley bottom, both these will have impacts on bears in the area. Slides need to be glass for hours and hours and hours and days from a reasonable distance from the side of the slide always always careful for the wind direction and backing out before before the thermals push your sent uphill into the slides.

So with lots of snow in the mountains come spring the grizzlies will be concentrated on the slides and there will be no food in amongst the trees and to a certain extent even in the valleys and the cup blocks as these do not have a steep an angle as the slides and must melt rather than slide which is a faster process and occurs earlier. These truths remain constant even for coastal mountains all the Bears spend much shorter time in the mountains on the slides and head to the valley bottoms for the River and the tidal flats.

So I predict an exceptionally good year for the spring grizzly hunters be they mountain bear hunters or coastal bear hunters.

Thanks everyone for their well wishes, I have some good drugs on board, and am tolerating the situation I find myself in, Susan and Ebony are spoiling me and Jacuzzi hot tub takes a lot of the aches and pains away.

I also spoke with Doug this morning prior to his heading out with another client for cougars I wish him well them success and safety.

I predict that in the coastal region i.e. the region 5-08 three coastal grizzlies that meet or exceed the minimum for the Boone and Crockett records book will be taken, one over 9 1/2 feet !

For the mountains east of Williams Lake i.e. Cariboo mountains I predict even better year as I can see five or even eight grizzlies being harvested this spring:mrgreen:!! The one area in particular should have a very decent silvertip come out of there, and there's nothing that will beat and 8/2 foot silvertip from the mountains, there are some very very outstanding sized chocolate grizzlies in this area also and I predict a few of those.

This will be the best grizzly season for the past 20 years!

UH OH!

I just checked a few hunts, and compared the update in the link, the 2010/2011 synopsis and an old 2007 synopsis.

The hunt codes were the same for my old synopsis from 2007 and the online update. The 2010/2011 synopsis seems to be the different one.

It looks like the synopsis may be the one with the typo. As far as I know they use the same code year after year for each hunt. I'm glad my card is still on my desk, I'll wait until getting a solid answer from Victoria before I send mine in!!!

Good spott'in. I can't imagine the confusion this is going to cause. You put in for a great area, but you win a tag for a crap area in another region completely.

Not only are the hunts codes different but the number of draws looks wrong. The number of draws in the area I was going to put in for went up by over 2 1/2 times. The MU column must have shifted....but how far is anyone's guess?

My choice shifted by one - to the WRONG side of the mountain. :-|

Can I submit the bill for 4 hours extra travel time to the MoE?

PS - that's what happens when a union is involved - no one checks their work or pays attention.

I noticed that as well. The area I apply for is usually 12 draws but according to the link they have it went up to 27 draws:eek: Which is fine but there are really only 3-4 drainages to hunt so thats allot of company!!!

Draws on both sides of the draw I usually put in for uaually have similar number but they now don't so it doesn't look like they've shifted by only one either way:confused:.

depending on your hunt code you could end up getting a draw in a completly differnt region. I am guessing(hopeing) that the hunt codes are incorrect on the the latest sheet they put up

BromBones
01-23-2011, 11:18 AM
Pretty sure the updated list is a screw up. They do change hunt codes from year-to-year sometimes, but have never seen them change the codes on the updated list in late January.

I'm sure the LEH office will have a hundred e-mails waiting for them tomorrow morning and we'll have it figured out :)

I see 7-23E went from 17 draws in 2010 (0.1:1 odds) to 50 draws. You can quad across the zone in about 90 minutes. Access is by driving across a flooded road and its really grown in and brushy in most spots....50 tags....i think they're hoping somebody tries there LOL

Recent research shows grizzlies have adapted to pressure from hunters and are now planning a come back.
Biologists have peeked into many dozen sow dens this winter and they've all had litters of 10 or more cubs.
The increase in LEH authorizations is to combat these future potential marauding bears.
Even David Suzuki is concerned and recently got his CORE and PAL, as he doesnt want to end up like his friend Timothy Tastewell.

I talked to the very personable LEH guy this AM, and he clarified the error for me (and quite a few others already!). Short story is:

1. Use the hunt codes from the synopsis.
2. Use the # of authorizations from the update.

What a complete waste of time. How could something so easy be screwed up? I'll betcha they are scrambling in Victoria. In Campbell River neither the Access Center or Sports shops have any sheets on the Hunt Codes. This shows the complete lack of respect the MOE has for our hunts and money. If this website didn't exist I would have no idea about these early hunts. The poor guy that can't use or afford the time to sit in front of a computer is totally in the dark.

Gary-You can find it here...pg 14. In the paper version as well.

And it it also mentioned here in the "Hunting News" scetion...although the link doesn't really get you to the proper location.

The only things that have may have changed are the number of authorizations....and they usually don't swing that much.
