Lets see some pics of the various packs we are using for hunting sheep.

This is my Jim Shockey Blacks Creek yukon Pack. 6500 cubic inches 35 inches deep. This pack is fully adjustable to fit any torso. The hipbelt is the same as a Kifaru in fact the Gunbearer system that comes with a Kifaru pack fits right on.Has ample room for accessory pouches on the belt.Adjuster straps to pull the load tight against your back.Nice lumbar pad and back padding. You can raise and lower the bag as you like on the Wilderness Wanderer like bag attachment. The bag has a zipper shelf inside and access to the lower section at the front. The side pockets are very large easily fit a spotting scope. The side pockets flip out and you can slip a tripod, rifle or any long object down between the pack and pocket. There are compression straps to hold the item there. It also has a little holder for a rifle butt if you want to pack it there.Compression straps across the back of the pack.Has two extra possibles pouches the smaller one has a shell holder in it the larger one can be attached to your belt for a day pack.Lots of tiedown points on these.A map pocket on the bag.Price paid $179.00 US

I've never sheep hunted but have a pack that I'm working on as a winter project, thought some of you do it yourselfers may appreciate it.

The pack is home-built and uses an old external frame coupled to an internal frame harness system from an old pack of mine. To the frame I added an aluminum hauling shelf. You'll notice from the pics that the shelf is bolted and hinged so when it's not in use you can swing it down and out of the way, or just take it off altogether.

For packs, I'm modifying some old MEC bags that have about 6 litre capacity. I'll also add a rifle and axe caddy to the sides of the frame.... I hate strapping a rifle into the soft side of a pack, it just shifts around all the time.

Why did I do this, you may be asking.... I just don't like the fit and feel of internal frames. Good external frames like some of those by sheep people on this site cost mucho $$$$. So, for about $60 in material I thought I'd give it a shot and make my own.

I'm pretty happy with it, I've done a few hikes with it and makes heavy loads feel pretty good.

Here was my Blacks Creek pack from 5 years ago. It was a pretty good pack other then the waistbelt wouldnt tighten enough around my skinny waist. All the weight of the pack was on my shoulders.

Blacks Creek use to make these packs but discontinued them over a year ago. The only way to get one now is find a used one. They use to be $500 new, but Cabelas blew out all their inventory on camofire last year for under $200.

Not sure where buck got his......

Hey Buck!

That's the major weakpoint f the WW's.

The hipbelt is attached behind the Lumbar pad. There is a solid board that runs up the pack. There is two strips of Velcro stitched onto the board and two strips on the hip belt.It is tight between the lumbar and board and the hipbelt slips in between and is held in place with the wide velcro strips. One of my pics shows the basic idea.I will also add that the lumbar is stitched into the board top and bottom. There is also two straps stitched onto each side of the hip belt that attach to the frame. You can pull the pack tight against your lower back with those. It appears to be quite strong.

http://i263.photobucket.com/albums/ii159/Ramcam-Photos/ShockeyPack2014.jpg

Hard to see the straps but they are there.

Did you buy it from Camofire recently, Did you have it shipped or pick it up down in the USA on your own. Does it make a Day pack as well (not the waist pouch) was going to purchase one last year but it was sold out seems affordable and looks like it will do the Job.

I bought it last August and had it shipped to Ship Happens in Sumas. No duty guys at the desk were Hunters .It looks like it may be a little difficult to find one now.I wish i would have bought another at that price. With Shipping and exchange it was $220.00 or less.

That one pouch you see in the middle can be attached to your belt it is 9x12

I agree...the WW still carries weight better than any other pack I've tried so far....including a Barney.
Just wish it had the Barney workmanship and quality:rolleyes:.

I offered to "try" to help the couple @ WW to address some of the weakness of the pack(and they accepted my offer)...but so far I'm at a loss as to how to approach how the hipbelt is attached. Mine's blown out ~5 times.:?

If some changes aren't made to the design so it's as reliable as other packs in the same price range, I'm sure it will go the way of the Dodo bird.

Can't say enough good things about Mystery Ranch. 3 seasons guiding sheep plus my own hunting so around 150-175 days in the field and the first stitches went at the end of this season. I'll send it in to get patched and should be ready to go for next year.

Don't waste your money on the band lands packs they are way over priced, not very comfortable with a heavy load and mine never lasted more than a year and a half, zippers and buckles break with in a year. stick with what works WW, ketly, Tatonka, Alaskan, etc. just my 2 cents
