January 15, 2011 will be the 4th Annual Public Winter Wildlife Count for the agricultural area around Fort St John, Dawson Creek and Chetwynd. The count originated from public concerns about wildlife in agricultural areas and a group of ag producers and hunters got together and came up with the idea of a public count to add their observations to the information already collected by the Wildlife Branch. This has turned into an annual event and will provide a long-term data set of trends in populations similar to the popular Christmas Bird Counts held every year.
The area around Dawson Creek and Fort St John has been divided into 5 km by 5 km squares and participants can choose one or more blocks to survey by driving or walking. You record your observations of mule deer, white-tailed deer, moose, elk, and other wildlife as well as the amount of time spent looking. Contact the Fish & Wildlife office (250) 787-3411 (ask for Nick or Lori or Conrad) to sign up and be part of the count.
The results of the first count are available online here: http://wwwd.env.gov.bc.ca/peace/documents/public%20winter%20ungulate%20count%20newsletter%20 %20april%202008.pdf
