the crusty snow and cold weather we are experiencing around Kamloops is prime for coy dogs, keeps them out late in the mornings and early in the evening.

Probably half are intercepted and susequently stalked while hiking to my next calling set.

The other half are falling to a combo of interogation howl, mulie fawn in distress and coyote pup in distress. Mixing it up with mouth calls and Fox Pro.

Small bowls and low spots with thicker grass and buck brush are good areas right now because the snow hasn't set as hard and the little furry bastids can break through it for mice etc.

Way to go pistol:-D. Are u still using that 243 Ackley improved? Brother has been stacking them on our side of the river. Called in five got four the other day and this morning he called me and had a triple come in and cut two down with the third narrowly escaping:wink:. Good luck in a couple weeks and look forward to your stories! Ramshot.

Wow ! got to tie into some of that action .What are the prefered calls and can one use a 22 ? my 338 is a tad big . last question what does one do with them , sell the pelt, make dog food:confused: I have no clue( total nubi to this)

Bear

I use a few different setups my main rifle is a custom 243AI pushing 105gr Hornady AMax. Next is a sweet model 70 243WSSM pushing 70gr Ballistic tips and last is a Kimber Pro Varmin 22-250 and 55gr Sierra Blitz Kings.

the country here is open and windy, long heavy bullets work best

Check my response to SSS re calls. A .22 will work with the right conditions but wouldn't ne my first choice. Better to use the 338. Skin them and sell the pelt.

Thanks for taking care of business. That's a good haul

So basically you can sell the pelts and that's it... Does it even cover your fuel costs? Or is it just target practice

Blackford

Not to worried about covering fuel costs as I get pretty good mileage with my pack boots.

Its good exercise, keeps shooting and hunting skills sharp, controls deer, sheep and livestock predation and is damn good fun.

I'll average 60 or so a year, best year was 93, best weekend was 13, best day was 9.

Any worth skinning? We have had a big dose of mange going through the coyotes lately. If the Coyotes are pink to red in the belly, crotch armpit areas that is sarcoptic mange coming on. There have no fur value unless someone is looking for the backs.

I heard that the guy with the tannery down on the road the to city dump will buy the hides. Im not sure if its true though.

All these dogs are nicely furred and clean. We've had a few cases of mange show up over the last couple of years but it has never become an epidemic. Keeping the population thinned out seems to help control th espread.

Wow, nice shooting... just shy of your bakers dozen of 13 in a day, that's what I would call working the country side with those pack boots. You mentioned you use different setups with the 250/243 etc... what about the optics for those long range shots... in the loops hills.

How do you like that Schmidt and Bender scope? As far as $3000 scopes go I am sure it is great. But how would you compare it with other high end scopes? Would you buy another? I am looking at some new long range glass and trying to figure out if S&B is worth the dollars. Tough to separate all the high end stuff when not using them in real life situations......know what I mean?????

i love that scope. it seems optics are one of the few things in the world that the price reflects the quality.

this rifle scope has no equal IMO, i would buy another one for this purpose. its downfall and the reason i don't use S&B on my big game rifles is weight. for hunting, when you have nothing else to pack or for long range targets, as i stated earlier it has no equal.

WOW that is excellent do you need another coyote hunting partner...

Here are a few of mine from over the Christmas Holidays rifle is an 18.6" barreled Robinson Arms XCR-L in 223 was loaded with 40gr V-Max @ 3250fps, scope is an older Leupold Vari X 11 4-12X40 AO that I had Tony @ Korth do a warranty check and install a LR reticle in last year.

I'm finding that the 223 works great on 150 yards and closer but beyond that the dogs run further than I like going to switch back to my 6.8spc upper and load my 95gr TTSX @ 2825fps for my next coyote hunt I have a Leupold VX111 4.5-14X40 30mm tube side focus Varmint reticle scope on this combo.

I'm curious are you seeing any bobcat in your area?

Awesome Cook, were you calling or stalking?

That setup looks very cool, but like you, I found the 223 just can't get there consistently past 200yds, especially in wind. Pretty neat when you can swap uppers and have a whole new rig in seconds. What kind of accuracy are you getting with the 6.8?

I've only had one bobcat come into the call and shot one while walking through a wooded draw, that makes 2 in 10 years or so.

Anytime you want to go and chase dogs together count me in...

These were all stalking the area I was hunting the dogs would not come into the FX3/calls but that was my screw up with batteries more than anything else.

With the 6.8spc when wind is light I average 3" 3 shot groups @ 300 yards but only averaging 6" 3 shot groups @ 400 + yards I definitely need to spend more time shooting the longer distances with this setup just haven't had the time to do it yet.

I have several other predator rifles as well a 23" T/C Contender carbine with barrels in 23" bull in 204 Ruger (32gr V-Max =- 4040fps) & 21" tapered in 223 (40gr V-Max = 3400fps), an older Ruger M77 tang safety in 22-250 (55gr anything = 3660fps 60gr Sierra HP's = 3550fps), Sako 85 Grey Wolf in 22-250 (52gr Speer TNT= 3700fps) and an older 22" barreled 1-12" twist made in Germany Voere long action rifle that was made in Yakima Wash in 6mm-284 = 70gr Ballistic Tips @ 3550fps).

I've decided to set the 6mm-284 up zeroed @ 500 yards it has a cheap Bushnell 3200 7-21X mildot scope on it so if shots are closer I'll just move up the reticle to the appropriate dot and no I haven't sighted it in like this yet I want to be set up to reach out to the dogs that hang up 500 + yards out...

I don't know when I'll be up in the Merritt/Kamloops area again but I'll let you know if/when I do...

Not wanting to persuade you or anything but if you want to connect consistently on dogs out to and past 500yds I would suggest a turret setup over a reticle, especilly over a mildot. Mildot reticles were designed by the US military for a 6 foot tall vertical human target and are therefore rather coarse for 8 to 10 inch vertical coyote body. The drop on your 6mm-284 using an 80gr Ballistic Tip @ 3650 fps for 50yds, between 450 and 500yds, is approx 8 inches or 0.4 of a mil, pretty tough to hold. You can get Tony @ Korth to install a turret on one of your Leupolds for about $80 and he'll match it to the ballistics of your pet load, even inscribes the load, velocity and zero range onto the cap. You can zero at 300yds and the dial is calibrated in 50 yd increments with .25 MOA increments between, its pretty slick.

I agree turrets are the way to go, my brother has that canadian edtion leo. good to 700 yards, close enough for dogs. I prefer my nightforce, but alot more money. congrats on all the dogs.

I've tried to stay away from turrets because I know that when the action gets going I'll forget to turn them back...

Nope I learnt years ago that its not for me here is an example I shot over the nicest blond bear I had ever seen because I had forgotten to turn the turret back down ...
