if your in an area that has dead pine trees..they are under the bark .

We used to find them in downed birch and alder, but then the time of year and condition of wood was also a factor in finding them. We never hunted them in winter, only late spring at runoff time when the creeks were high.
In the cold of winter we would use maggots (sold at bait shops) or angleworms we would find at a warm sh*tpile behind our neighbors cow barn.
Someone mentioned thin stips of raw chicken skin as an alternative that seemed to work good too.

Ours were downed, and semi rotted, but still had secure bark.

both ..the bigger bull pine is the best .
