Well after getting out a few times this season and not seeing anything except a few tracks and scat I decided I wanted to get out and try one more time.

I called up Kyle (Barracuda) on Monday morning and asked him to go with me on Tuesday morning, last minute but the rest of my week was filling up quickly.

Anyways we went to this spot that Kyle knew about and parked. We got out and walked one road and we were seeing fresh large scat and tracks which was encouraging seeing as it rained HARD for the last few hours. We came to a dead end and turned around after seeing no bears. Then headed up another fork. More sign but no bears, I had my Circe 3-in-1 predator call on me so we decided to sit on the edge of the road over looking this small ravine and call for a while. This is the first time I used the mouth call, well any call at all. I just started blowing away like I had heard on the internet after listing to many differn MP3 tracks of dying rabitts.

After less then 5 minutes we had a bear come to check it out. We are guessing he came in from over 500 yards away as he was way down in the ravine. I kept squealing away and he kept making his way up the heavy underbrush covered hillside. I could see the brush moving as he moved along and got ready for him to crest the hill onto the deactivated logging road. finally his head popped out 35 yards away just down the road. Kyle was to my left a few feet, I was in the kneeling position ready to shoot if I got the word that he was a keeper. I was not terribly confident in judging bears yet. Kyle said" oh yeah he's a shooter, take hime, take him....take him...!!" what Kyle didn't know from his vantage point was all I could see was the bears head down sniffing the ground pointed head on to me, and his back area. kyle had a good quartering away shot, I had to wait. Finally he turned broadside for me and I let 180 grains of death go his way. It was a good shot broke the front leg, took part of the lungs and turned the far side shoulder into a mass of jelly and bone fragment. However the stubborn bugger did not go down, he turned tail and bolted for 20 yards then headed back downhill into the nasty thick over grown bush. We eventually found him and put 2 more rounds in to finish him off but it was a hell of a drag to get him out.

I want to thank Kyle for his Kindnesss in taking me out, helping me with the majority of the dragging, the bear outweighed me about 2 to 1 so I was having trouble moving him. And finally also for showing me how to gut these wonderful animals!

It was a great trip, We left Maple Ridge at about 8am, had the bear down by about 10 am and back at the truck about 12 pm. I spent the rest of the day skinning and butchering the bear now its in the freezer. We will make some into sausage peperoni, and the rest keep as roasts I think.

Oh yeah, He measured just over 5 feet nose to tail .Remington 700, 30-06 180 grain bullets
What a thrill, I am hooked on bears now :D

You're a better caller than me!

I tried calling this year numerous times and all I got was a headache after blowing through my call so much.

Nice Bear!

Happy Hunting!

I it was very a good hunt, Rhys did an outstanding job on calling (gotta love the Circe 3 in one I think it is one of the best mouth calls out there , super versatile ) and he was very composed and waited for the right shot .
From where i was kneeling i could see the bear clearly and had the rifle on him for a right shoulder forward shot as the bear was comeing in our direction zeroing in on where the squealing had been comeing from , i said "take em" several times and then Rhys let me know his veiw was obscured by some foliage , we waited motionless till bear turned and presented him with a clear broadside shot .
The bear was dead it just didnt know it , It is hard to believe even with the massive damage of the first round that the bear was able to function and get into the thick stuff (If only he had gone up the mountan instead of down it). They are extremly tough animals .

The area hunted is steep mountainous terrain with with foot access to deactivated roads in various states of regrowth ,which make for lots of legwork, nice hunting but alot of effort on the retrieval . It is completly inaccessable by vehicles (MC or quad wont even make it into there) so packing it back is a real feat in itself, .
In high pressure areas it pays to get into the areas where vehicles cant get to

Had a great time .

Good job sounds like a good hunt:p

I know what you mean about judging bears it was really tough. Its good to have a second opinion as I probably would have had a bigger bear if my hunting partner was closer!

It was my first time gutting a bear also this season and caping for a bear rug it was great to have help as I have never taken any animals into a taxidermist before and I didnt know where to start.

I bought my from a company named Wing Supply in the states.

http://www.wingsupply.com/shop/Scripts/prodViewSKU.asp?SKU=CMVP4

Very simple to use you can listen to some examples of calling from this website that Kyle shared in anoter thread. There are mp3 files you can download to use with an electric caller too.

Hope this helps.

Get some permission from the farmers and landowners , I wouldnt mind hunting some of that open land for summer bear . Heck i could even bring up the hounds.

For the summer bear I would be contacting the apiaries in your area CowBoy. They would gladly let you rid them of a problem bear.

Happy Hunting,
Carl
