Well after getting out a few times this season and not seeing anything except a few tracks and scat I decided I wanted to get out and try one more time.
I called up Kyle (Barracuda) on Monday morning and asked him to go with me on Tuesday morning, last minute but the rest of my week was filling up quickly.
Anyways we went to this spot that Kyle knew about and parked. We got out and walked one road and we were seeing fresh large scat and tracks which was encouraging seeing as it rained HARD for the last few hours. We came to a dead end and turned around after seeing no bears. Then headed up another fork. More sign but no bears, I had my Circe 3-in-1 predator call on me so we decided to sit on the edge of the road over looking this small ravine and call for a while. This is the first time I used the mouth call, well any call at all. I just started blowing away like I had heard on the internet after listing to many differn MP3 tracks of dying rabitts.
After less then 5 minutes we had a bear come to check it out. We are guessing he came in from over 500 yards away as he was way down in the ravine. I kept squealing away and he kept making his way up the heavy underbrush covered hillside. I could see the brush moving as he moved along and got ready for him to crest the hill onto the deactivated logging road. finally his head popped out 35 yards away just down the road. Kyle was to my left a few feet, I was in the kneeling position ready to shoot if I got the word that he was a keeper. I was not terribly confident in judging bears yet. Kyle said" oh yeah he's a shooter, take hime, take him....take him...!!" what Kyle didn't know from his vantage point was all I could see was the bears head down sniffing the ground pointed head on to me, and his back area. kyle had a good quartering away shot, I had to wait. Finally he turned broadside for me and I let 180 grains of death go his way. It was a good shot broke the front leg, took part of the lungs and turned the far side shoulder into a mass of jelly and bone fragment. However the stubborn bugger did not go down, he turned tail and bolted for 20 yards then headed back downhill into the nasty thick over grown bush. We eventually found him and put 2 more rounds in to finish him off but it was a hell of a drag to get him out.
I want to thank Kyle for his Kindnesss in taking me out, helping me with the majority of the dragging, the bear outweighed me about 2 to 1 so I was having trouble moving him. And finally also for showing me how to gut these wonderful animals!
It was a great trip, We left Maple Ridge at about 8am, had the bear down by about 10 am and back at the truck about 12 pm. I spent the rest of the day skinning and butchering the bear now its in the freezer. We will make some into sausage peperoni, and the rest keep as roasts I think.
Oh yeah, He measured just over 5 feet nose to tail .Remington 700, 30-06 180 grain bullets
What a thrill, I am hooked on bears now :D
