This thread is for Hunter1947, and anyone else that enjoys looking at (random) old hunting pics. I have been able to borrow some of the old man's photo albums and started scanning them. I thought I'd share some of them here for anyone interested.

Wayne...my Pa was also born in 1947, so the vintage of the shots will probably be very familiar to you!

Here's a few to get started, and I'll post more over the next couple weeks as I get them all scanned.

This is a 1978 pic...same K5 Blazer as the green one below, but it was painted sometime between '76 and '78.

Same trip, with a moose in the back of my Dad's Jeep...

When they arrived home (Langley)...note the racks on the front of the truck and Jeep!
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v230/Staggerino/Old%20Pictures/1976_MooseHunt_013_resize.jpg

A pic from 1977...the rifle is a brand new Rem 700 BDL in 8mm Rem Mag. Freshly purchased from Corlanes Sporting Goods in Dawson Creek. The truck is practically brand new too...a 1977 GMC Sierra Classic...my Dad kept that truck until 2007 and it looked like new for most of its life!

A 1979 moose, and my Pa with his '77 GMC. His 8mm Rem Mag is now sporting a fancy Redfield Widefield 3-9x scope. The canopy on the truck was home-made...and heavier than hell.

My Pa with his elk, taken on the Muskwa in 1979.

Another 1979 moose, from the Chilcotin. My Pa packing out a quarter...

Here are some more pics from 1977...

My Dad's hunting partner put together most of the photo albums after their hunts, and liked to start off with a picture of the regs from that year...the mud on this one is foreshadowing...
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v230/Staggerino/Old%20Pictures/1977_MooseHunt_001_resize.jpg

Here's my Dad's new truck and his Jeep in tow, ready to hit the highway to the Peace Country. This is in Langley, where we lived until 1980.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v230/Staggerino/Old%20Pictures/1977_MooseHunt_003_resize.jpg

They (three of them) drove all day, and all night. Got stuck and slept in the canopy until morning...here's them getting the Jeep unhooked and unstuck in the AM...
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v230/Staggerino/Old%20Pictures/1977_MooseHunt_006_resize.jpg

This is after getting out....my Dad calls this picture, "Breakfast for 3"...love those old stubbies.

Just love those three pics - Front seat = gun , beer & paper towels. Stuck in the muck above the wheel wells. Going to a wet breakfast wearing hip waders.

Now that's typical of exactly like it was. "Those were the days my friend" tra-la-la-la-la. God I hated that muck though - still do, and that's why I moved.

Great photos for sure!

Thanks for taking the time to scan them and post them up. Some of us *ahem* are the first ones in many generations to take up hunting, and the pics of you and your Dad make me jealous, but in a good way. You're lucky to have your Pops as a hunting partner.
Thanks again SSSSter!!

Great pics!

Your Dad and his buddies sure did a great job of documenting their adventures....something that seems more normal for this day and age.

My Dad was lucky to take a hunting pic or two every couple of years ....at best.

Keep them coming!

Glad you're all enjoying them. http://www.huntingbc.ca/forum/images/icons/icon14.gif

SSS...my Dad was pretty lucky to have a friend that took time to take photos and make albums, etc. He did a great job with them, and there is a big difference between the hunts he was on, and the ones in between. The albums are a real treasure now (and have been viewed over and over and over since the hunts took place). Sadly, the one responsible for them has passed on to the happy hunting grounds, far too early, so this is a bit of a tribute to him too in a way.

I'll have more posted tonite or tomorrow afternoon for sure. :)

IIRC, they popped a u-joint.

My Pa ended up selling the Jeep the next year...as anyone who has (had) one knows, they are the land equivalent of a boat (a hole in the water that you dump money into). :D I had a '77 CJ-5 for a couple years in the early '90s and it nearly bankrupt me. lol

Yeah, they are not cheap vehicles to run... When they do run. I'd usually go a week or two with my 75 CJ-5 until something broke. Lots of fun though.

Any pictures of lakes nearby the moose hunting spots?

LOL. No-one could find most of these spots now anyway...they're either covered in a grid of oil & gas leases or logged. Most of the pics so far are from the famous Del Rio, back in its heyday. They'd winch in for a day or two, just to get less than 10 km from the ranch. There may not have been road closures, but there weren't any roads either! lol

In the 1976 pics (the ones that have a reddish tinge to them) there were 12 guys from the LML (my Pa included) in camp, and they took 11 moose. My Dad and his partners would drive up for a weekend and bring back two moose with no problem.

He's got some pics from the late '60s and early '70s where they made the trip up north in a car! Loaded the moose on the roof! I am hoping he can dig those ones up...they're not as well organized and I haven't seen them in a while.

OK...sorry to take so long getting back to this. Got tied up over the weekend and never got any scanning done. I'll try to put some more up every couple days, as long as folks seem interested anyway.

Here are some pics from a 1980 moose hunt. We had just moved up to Chetwynd, so Dad wouldn't have to drive up there a few times each fall. lol

Getting off the beaten path, with the old faithful GMC.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v230/Staggerino/Old%20Pictures/1980_MooseHunt_004_resize.jpg

There was no such thing as "the gutless method" or "boning out" for my Pa and his crew. They like round steaks and t-bones with the bone in, and did whatever it took to get the quarters out whole. Note the saw...they got more sophisticated as the years went by. lol

These are truly a treasure Kody94. Thank you for sharing them. Great old pic's. Can't get enough of them. Wonder how they killed all those animals without camo:-D.

Those last couple of shots with the plywood box in them reminds me of the ones my father inlaw (really good carpenter/woodworker) still makes. He has about 5 or 6 like those that he takes hunting with him to pack alot of the camp stuff in. When they are unpacked they make great bed side tables in the wall tent, coffe table etc. or as in your pictures a great stool to get up higher for certain chores.

Please keep them coming. This is a great thread.

Thanks.

Kody94, some of those pics bring back memories for me. My dad had an old 77-78 chev 2wd with tire chains. We used to rock back and forth till we got out of a hole! Tire chains and all! My uncles had the old 70's-80's chevs and fords with the bias ply tires and winches and snatch blocks. Loved the case of Blue on the seat, only needed to see some bullets stuck in drilled holes in the dash and I might have thought it was my families photo albums!! My uncle still shoots the 8mm rem, shoot a deers eye out at 300yrds is what he calls accurate!!LOL Thanks a bunch for these, keep em coming! Moosin

As we get older [and I am] we appreciate the pictures of simpler, happy times, more and more.

When you're lying in the cold sludge, wrestling rusty bolts off with frozen, muddy, skinned hands, you curse it. But later it seems like the best of times. And it was.

And today, hopefully, we are making those memories for those that come after us.

Thanks K94, your pics are stirring my own memories. Keep stirring.

Kody94, thanks for sharing. Your family photo's make me think that it is about time to start taking a few photo's of my own soon. Either that or find a partner like your Dad had that does such a wonderful job of documenting the adventure's. I guess in todays world I would need to find a partner that is good with the kumputer and all (digitital photo's, and www sites to look at).

Looking forward to your next set of oldies and perhaps even a few new ones.

Here's a few from 1984. There are two different hunts here...a September hunt with 4 guys, then a late hunt with just my Dad and his buddy that took most of the pictures. They got two moose on each hunt.

I think its just because the right rear tire was down in the ditch, but both fronts were on the main road surface. You can see the tilt on the box. My Pa looks a little winded eh? lol I can recall loading moose halves with him a few times...hard work! :)

Awesome job Chris.....

My pa is still alive and kicking, unfortunately in his hey day of hunting, you went, as your pictures show, basic...Gun, wool, knife and sweat....No camera:evil:

He tells some great stories, but it sure would be nice to see pics from that era....

Keep it up Kody, this is one of the most enjoyable (and civil too) threads of the year...

X2.... the greatest and most enjoyable thread in a long while..!

Being of the same generation as your Dad Chris,,,this gets me thinking about the old days,,,brings back awesome memories of those great years. Most of us weren't much for taking pictures in those days (including me) and the few we did take were of crappy quality, a shame really, you're really lucky to have all these photos.

Very cool of you to share your family shots with us!

I call BS! Everyone knows you can't kill animals with that kind of gear. No cammo, no scent-lock, no gore-tex. Those wood stocks will warp as soon as you take them outdoors and the barrels will rust shut. And those empty brass aren't even magnums! Those moose must have died laughing. And those three-wheeler pics were staged. They'll roll over and kill you if they're not kept perfectly level.

 :D:D:D

Thanks for the awesome pics man! Those bring back a lot of great memories of my dad. To this day I still wear one of his green checkered wool jackets when I'm still hunting.

Thanks for this, must bring back great memories. I remember hunting for moose back in the mid or late 70's, my dad, brother and I were walking along an old jeep road back to a lake (near were we lived in Ft. St. James), an argo with a couple of hunters drove up (they were from the LML), I remember that machine, we were pretty impressed, did your dad ever hunt in that area?

Thanks again, do you have any more.

We left a lot of moose antlers in the woods, the moose was our meat for the year.

They sure did! They were like the "mounties of moose hunting"...they always got their moose!

My bro' and I were definitely not protien deficient growing up. lol. Keep in mind that the last photo with the 12 quarters in the garage was the same year I shot my first moose (the calf from a few pages back), and deer season hadn't even started yet. Big freezers, and game meat with every meal! I didn't find out what beef tasted like until I went away to university. :)

Most guys wouldn't dare putting a beauty like that through bogs and mud. I used to have a 79 Chev with a 400 small block. Friggun miss that thing.

I've seen this view of the floorboards many times. My Dad used to have a 77 GMC that we'd cruise all over the farm with. 25.06 shells on the dash, on the floor, on the seat and my Dad's Sako siting in its soft case with the zipper down. Most of the time when we got something we'd have to drive to get a knife from my grandparents place.
Good times. Thanks for the reminder.

Great thread Kody94 I first started hunting that area in 89. I remember the hunting cabin your talking about. ( I think ) there were a few up there. I do remember a August hunt 1989 or 1990 there was a argo parked in front with about a 50" velvet bull in it. I was wondering if its the same spot and if you recall pictures of that one. The cabin i was thinking of burned down in the early 90s , and shortly after that access to the area was denied when the property owners took out the bridge.

Chris, "Kody94", is a good guy and he does not seem to post here now, too bad, he is a Registered Professional Forester and I always enjoyed debating with him on various issues of forest management.

He, of course, knows far more than an old gimp like me does, I am a year older than his dad and I remember mud holes, snow banks higher than our heads, the Lardeau, the Elk Valley before Elkford, the fabulous Flathead where my first BCFS L/O was almost 50 years ago and wool, I still wear it and have one beret older than most members here.

Few here will remember or know what BC was like when I started fishing, hunting, hiking and backpacking, my first trout came from Cottonwood Creek in a section now covered with asphalt.........we have lost SO much and it still continues.

Chris, if you are out there, give us a holler, eh!

Incredible pictures! Sure ages a guy looking at the dates. It's great to see someone take the time to share such personnel memory's, thank you Kody94! I too can remember being stuck up to the doors in mud and digging and swearing all bloody day trying to get out, but the beer was always cold, and I just kept trying to convince myself, some day I've going to laugh about this! Doesn't take long to forget the cuts and bruises from the jack-all handle smacking your arms, and the smudge fires we built beside the truck trying to keep the bug's away! Just think'in, it'd be great getting stuck at this age, with a bunch of young up and coming hunters doing all the dirty work, well the old guys sit back, sip hot coffee and watch!
