Will this do or will I need something else?

I just read Stephane's "Knife: What would you do?" thread and thought I should find out if this Christmas present I got will do everything I need to do to a deer in the field or will I need something else?

I think that is just a gut hook. I dont think it will skin too well. Buy an olfa aswell, they are awsome and light

I use a boning knife for everything.

That blade looks as if it'll do well for field dressing (gutting) an animal. As for skinning, well you yourself can see that the blade isn't designed for that job. You'll need another knife to skin the animal.

I use a Gerber Metolius as an all around knife, Easy to sharpen, holds a good edge, and will work well in all situations. Not hugely expensive, either.

I use the Cub from Knives of Alaska for just about everything. Here is a link for something like you have posted; but also has a blade that swings over. I used one on my buddies bear last year and I like the idea of the gut hook.

Main thing for me keeps an edge and has a long blade,hate stubby knives.
