Hi,

I am driving down to Victoria (from the Yukon) in the next week and was wondering if anyone had some recent input on the conditions on the Stewart Cassier Highway.

Does anyone think it is worth saving the extra distance or is the road a lot rougher then the Alaska Highway.

I have only driven the Alaska Highway before in the winter but was thinking maybe to try the other route if the weather looks okay.

Thanks for any input.
Merry Christmas

Andrew

that is risky place to hope to get up to date current info for Northern BC highways,

I have seen major Hwys in Northern BC closed for 10 or 12 hours before it shows up on the " Just try annd drive BC website "

I've driven the Cassier a few times, including during winter conditions. I would opt for the Alaskan this time of year mainly because it is more travelled, better and more frequently maintained, and not as isolated if problems arise. Better chance to secure lodging if the road is closed as well.

Being a "local" of sorts and having traveled the highway a lot, I can tell you that the Cassiar highway is as good as the Alaskan or any other BC highway. It is entirely paved and seal coated so no rougher than any other with typical frost heaves at all. There will be less traffic on it than the Alaska highway.
Being a Yukon'er, the typical winter driving won't be an issue for you.
In the winter time, fuel and gas is available at Dease Lake, Iskut and Bell II, then nothing again to Kitwanga. No real giant hills or anything to worry about, but a heck of a nice drive.
