Yup sure did, while Elk hunting I walked right into 2 big ones at about 50ft. They stared for the longest time and they both left into the bush only to come back out onto the same game trail and cut the distance in half. Not a nice feeling when your standing there with only a bow. For some reason they stared at me for an eternity and decided just to leave. Wouldn't wish that on anybody.

Holy jeez ! that sounds fun
Im a bit nervous about next season in the east Koots . I hear the area is thick with Grizz and I am going to be hunting the shite out of the local hills .... I hope to have a few peaceful encounters that I can learn from .
Grizzly bears are an awesome critter that I have alot of respect admiration for ..... but at the same time, they scare the crap out of me :-D

Loaded the truck up with the moose. drove around the corner and theres the grizzly darting across the road. not a very close encounter but makes me think that he was probably coming in to where we were draging the moose out of the swamp. also was pretty close to camp..

We never saw him, but had a fresh large set of tracks around our camp all week. And three days after I hung a treestand, I was walking into it for the afternoon and followed the same "big" set of tracks about 200 yards up a trail right to the base of my tree. They were definitely around, but no problems to speak of.

Got to the butchers with my elk and me and my buddy are sitting around outside the truck waiting for the butcher to come out. He eventually comes out running with a rifle and tells us to "get in the truck!" He then gets to our truck and hands my buddy a .328 and tells him it's loaded. He then finally tells us that there is a griz in the area that's taken a few runs at him and by the way his dogs were acting he was pretty sure the griz was sitting in the bush watching us. He loaded the quarters while we stood guard. He killed the griz a few days later.

I didn't but found one dead in the bush with a hole straight through the chest from head on. Looked a little suspicious to me and we called it in to the CO's. They looked into it and said it was a guide in the area that had to shoot it as he was on his quad and the bear was chasing a calf moose and then turned on him. Funny thing is I found a gut pile to a calf moose about 50 yards away from the griz about the same age as the griz (a day or so old). Stories didn't quite match. I think that someone panicked and shot the griz, but who knows except for the guy who was there at the time.

Seems like every year I have some kind of run in with a grizz or 4 but this year it got fairly tense. My buddy and I were hunting grizz in some mature timber along a fish creek. I decided to walk down to the creek to check out some fresh tracks and came across two grizz cubs and a sleeping sow at 25 yards. She didn't hear me or wind me as I backed away but spotted my buddy and I as we were trying to make our getaway. Short charge and no shots fired, happy ending for all.

At a minimum, I'd start carrying bear spray if I were you!! I've had a few encounters working in the coastal bush but so far, nothing while hunting (knock wood). Doesn't stop me from looking over my shoulder all the time though.....

x2 with bear spray .large size canister in holster on my belt..even if I have 338 slung over my shoulder.
After reading Gary Sheltons books I am a bit bearanoid and realize things can happen dang quick , you may not have time to use your rifle and the spray may save your bacon, for bow hunters I think you would be crazy not to carry at least one can on your hip.(not in your back pack)

I can say with certainty that bear bangers work. I will never wander in bear country without them again. They work on big boars, sows with cubs, juveniles, whatever...they work. I'm sure people will say a 12 Ga with slugs is the best defence, but we never had to use ours because we had bear bangers.

No run ins or problems when hunting this year but I was working on a fire near Houston and during the mop up stage the wildlife started coming back in to the area. Almost every morning on the drive in someone would see a grizz so we were all aware of the danger.
On the last day we were there I was rolling up some hose and my crew boss comes on the radio says be careful guys I just saw a bear run in near where you guys are working. Less then a minute later I hear crashing through the bush uphill from me. Oh shit what the heck am I gonna do??? I decided to just stand there like an idiot and the bear ran right past me maybe 50 feet away up the hill. Don't think it even knew I was there just kept running, guess he was in a rush to be somewhere at the time.
Deffinetly a lot scarier when you dont have a gun with ya

And man!!! Can they ever move going up a hill too! Seen my share of that in the Yukon.

had our moose quarters hanging in the back of our trailer, with the door down and got woke up in the middle of the night by a black bear tugging on our quarters. Thank goodness my welds for the support held and the rope didnt break. The bear hung around the rest of our trip he wouldnt show himself during the day but would come into camp at night, the bear would moan while coming in so we knew he was there. Sure wasnt concerned with our scent or the noise of the generator, never encountered a bear that curious before.

Buy 2, then you still have one to read after throwing the first one at the bear.

Had a big grizzly walk right through our camp area. I'm not normally afraid of bears but to unexpectedly have one walk up on you, right before dark, then turn walk right behind your tent and disappear into the timber was alittle unnerving. Never saw him again, but was just fine with that. Wish I had a tag!

The bears were probably trying to figure out if you were a Sasquatch that had taken up bow hunting.

The east koots is crawling with bears, stay out!!!!!!!

3 years ago had a very close encounter with a sow and 2 yearling cubs.

The pics are from from 2 yrs ago, while hiking with my hunting buddy came across this set of tracks, it had snowed 6" the day before so this set was no more than a day old. We saw lots of fresh grizz tracks, that year.
That is a size 12 snow boot in the one pic and an extra large glove in the other, needless to say it is a very large grizz!!
Then last year had a hanging deer taken from our camp by either a young grizz or a black bear.
We will be going back in sept or oct!

Watch some Timothy Treadwell videos ...you'll see that grizz are not always dangerous killers. Just don't follow his lead and try those stupid stunts!!

It would depend on how close the bear is too you and whether or not it's aware of your presence. If the bear is close and unaware of you, making a loud noise could trigger an attack. Don't make eye contact, don't make any threatening moves...but most of all try to learn enough about them to get over your irrational fear...they can smell fear...;-)

No really intense encounters this season, only one big black bear had me rethinking my hiking route, he was huge but I don't really care for the meat and don't have any interest in mounts. I have a very healthy respect for bears, all of them, but when you stop to think about how many thousands of people spend thousands upon thousands of hours in the bush every year(I go for a hike at least once a week year round here in the Kootenays) and how very few incidents there are every year with bears it's hard to get all that worried. Read some good bear books buy a can of bear spray or a banger(take the time to learn how to use them) and stay aware of your surroundings. Anyhow I'm no expert and I'm sure most of the people here on the sight already know what I'm talking about. One place I do take extra precaution is when I'm field dressing big game, I always reload, have one in the chamber and keep the rifle close. I try to remember to stop and look around every once in awhile but you know how it is sometime I get pretty engrossed in my work.

I don't mean like fear "like holy shit there's a bear what do we do". I meant more like a respectful kinda fear, you know like the one that stops you from walking up on a biker and slapping him in the face haha. I guess what I'm saying is don't be affraid, but don't get comfortable either. Be to comfortable can lead to complacency, and complacency can lead to death. Lol that's what I meant.

Two years ago we set up camp in a very narrow valley and put the horses out to graze. I went to find some decent water because the main creek was infested with beavers. While I was away, my brother saw very large griz walking up the other side of the creek. He loaded a round into the chamber and he and the horses watched the griz walk right up the valley past them about 50 yards away. The horses were watching very closely. I was upstream where the valley narrowed down to the width of the creek with very steep slopes up on both sides. Bro wondered if he should fire a shot in the air to let me know something was up but decided against it. If the bear had kept going along the creek, I would have met him face to face. He must have winded me and gone up the hill. Never saw him.

Absolutly cant call it a good day with out beeing charged atleast once a season. So I must have had an awsome season because I was charged by a sow with two two year old cubs just a week after being charged by a bore. Thank god the quad is faster. This is the year of the 45-70 guide gun.

Fear is not necessarily a bad thing. If nothing else, it will give you a shot of adrenalin that you would not normally get and will enhance your survival abilities. That is right after you crap your drawers, which is the first reflex action in survival.

Grizzly bears are in the pig family and pigs are close to humans, that is why they try to use them to grow human body parts etc. generally animals can only smell fear in their own species ( perimones) it's arguable that bears have a close resemblance to the human animal and thus can smell our fear!!

lots of bear encounters, work on the coast counting salmon, nothing bad, They tend to be curious about new objects in their territory. something new in their backyard, have to mark it. they have differing personalities, the bold, and more aggressive feeding bears will be rewarded and pass on their genes if that behaviour has rewards, if the no fear of human gene gets passed on at a slower rate than the scared genes the population will naturally drift back to being scared of humans, I think what we may be seeing is the result of the bear population genetics showing a rebound from the days of persecution and extermination. So either we knock off the bold bears or accept the fact that you aren't the biggest baddest thing in the bush anymore.

it makes the game that much more real.

had nothing but grizz problems last year, they were both in our spike camp as well as our main camp(first time ever in main camp) they got a good jag of meat of off meat poles that we had used for years, totally ridiculous that in all of 7-50 there was one tag for the fall hunt, the grizz are becoming a large problem up in that area, this year will be bringing up cable to put higher in the trees but more importantly to allow us to keep the meat away from the trees, believe it or not there seems to be a family of grizz up there that is climbing the trees as a human would and then reaching out and slicing the meat bags open... no charges this year but we usually have at least on bluff charge a year
