I have a 300 WSM Browning A-bolt for deer and moose and have it equipped with a Bushnell Elite 3200. It gogs up real easy and always seems to be out of focus. I was never that fond of the scope and have decided its time to upgrade. I was thinking of getting a 50mm recticle for added light and bigger field of view. So if you were buying a new scope what would you get or suggest? Thousand bucks or less....Would you get a 4X12, 3X9....something else?? thanks

If you got $1000 budget, Leupold Vx3 3.5-10x40 Boone & Crockett or CDS dial. Use the leftover $200 on ammo to practice with

50 mm scopes are over rated, IMO. A good 40 mm sits lower and is more than adequate.

I'd buy what Toddler or Alpine suggested.

Steer clear of the Chinese shit that will ultimately get pumped in this thread.

X 2 on the Zeiss. The Conquest is about the same price as the equivalent Leupold and is a better buy IMO.

40mm is plenty, unless your mounting a spotting scope on your gun LOL
Leupold for me is the only way to go.

I've got a Vortex Diamondback 3-9x40 on my 25-06 it is bright, clear and sharp, however I only shot paper with it so far.
You can't beat that for the money, but take a look and compare.
I was reading somewhere the CEO of Swarowski went to Vortex, if that's any indication of quality.

Like the guys said go 40mm, in a quality scope you'll always have enough brightness for any legal shooting light with 40mm. I really like the Leupold VX-III in 3.5-10x40, the Zeiss Conquest 3-9x40 and at $1000 if you look around a bit you might be able to find the Swarovski 3-10x42.

I don't know if this is true but a knowledgable fellow told me that he had read some research showing that for people over 35 - 40 years old the added light from a 50mm over the 40mm is not perceptable due to the physical limitations of the human eye as we age.

Besides they a friggin huge, and usually look stupid ugly IMHO. LOL

Me too - the ONLY thing wrong with my purchase is I didn't buy the Z-Plex reticle. Love my scope. A lot.

Went with the Nikon 3-12x 42mm SF on the X-bolt in 300 WSM (medium Talleys) and .308 T/C Icon. Very bright (more so than lower priced 50s), works well and local warranty depot (Richmond) - had another scope from which the turrets popped off and they just replaced it with the newer model. WSS has them with BDC for about $529 and 10% off once already this Christmas season (spoke with Reliable and think they'll match). Nikon replaced the covers for me - they have the hard plastic on the outside of the hinge and rubber on inside - opposite to Butler Creek, Leupold... - so any torque on it from sling carry and it breaks while having the rubber on the outside of the hinge and hard plastic on insight part then can absorb some of the forces / not break. The BDC reticle has a 1.5 MOA inner circle, eye naturally finds the center, so works quite well and no stadia to obstruct vision. The cross has .25 width moa stadia thus similarly leaves a lot of the target visible.

Just purchased two Sightrons 4-16x 40mm AO - one arrived with a defect, Peter at Hirsch Precision shipped out a replacement for it before he received the return - cannot ask for better service than that (generally expect a business to have the item to be replaced in hand before shipping a replacement or at least authorize a charge on the VISA should the item not be returned). Came to $419 after shipping, taxes, rebate. A lot of scope for the money. Prefer the Nikon for the reticle and a little brighter (the stadia on the HHR reticle has a 3moa at min to .75 at max moa center dot, okay for hunting but not so good for target shooting thus had to go with MD, no center dot and .1 at max), may have paid the additional $125 for the Nikon 4-16x 42mm but the Sightron focuses closer in so works better when on a .22 for indoor shooting.

If money is no option and you want the best get a swaro. If you want great, get a leupold, if you are on a budget, get a redfield as they are made in the leupold factory and have the leupold waranty. I WILL NOT BUY CHINESE. Even if they have a good CEO.

Do not get 50mm, go with 40mm. You will be glad you did.

I run leupolds on all my rifles until my latest. I bought the very attractive 3x9 conquest and am impressed. As stated the eyepiece is a bit oversized. The bolt on my weatherby just kisses it every time I work it. What I like about the zeiss over the leupold is that scope adjusts just as you desire. None of my leupolds click adjustments move as accuratly. I will continue to use both, adding a few more zeiss as I go.

Wow - not true at all, but the distributor/sales rep in Canada did retire almost 2 years ago from Swaro and became the sales face for Vortex.

If you're on a budget try out one of the new Redfield Revolution scopes. I have the 3x9x40mm and it is great. It's even cheaper than a lot of the Chinese junk. Best of all, it's made and backed by Leupold - same warranty.

Hey!
That doesn't sound like Bushnell as they are generally very good. If you want an exceptional optic... then go to Vortex. I have a pair of their binocs and WOW. Check them out.

Actually, you can beat the warranty ... from what I have heard about the Vortex scopes, they just give you a new one on the spot ... no waiting for repair .
Im not saying the Vortex is the better scope, but the warranty is supposed to be the best of all of them :?

The best warranty is one you don't ever have to use. From what I've heard about Chinese scopes and binos, owners are very fortunate that they have a warranty.
