Well everyone after 4 weeks of hunting with Elkhound and letting many a' bears walk and seeing over 40 bears I finally pulled the trigger.
Last night at around 630 Dave and I went to check out a spot that we have seen bears in a few times and when we arrived there where 2 geese in the field and right away I thought that wasnt a good sign that bears had been moving through there, So as I rambled on about seeing these geese in here the past 2 weeks Dave says Dont Move! So I go still and slowly turn around only to see this what looked like a nice boar Emerge out of the bramble's and walk into the corner of the field. With the the way the bear was moving we thought we could go to this little rock pile and try and find a rest as he was completely unaware of us. After setting up on a big rock We waited..... After about 10 minutes Dave say's to me " Mabey he wasnt moving into the field? I'll go check and see if hes still around", So as Dave slowly moves down the little embankment He whispers "Whoa the bears right there and hes feeding his way into the meadow". So we waited another 5 minutes or so and nothing So once again Dave goes and takes a look and just as he's behind the little sapling's that where sheltering where the bear was It walks out. I tell Dave the bears in view and not to move untill I say so as he was looking right towards us. After our staring contest he starts walking along more into the meadow and after a few steps he stops and starts ruining this little sapling, Like tearing in up and clawing and biting at it (poor sapling didnt have a chance). After he had his little coniption against the foilage He went right back to feeding, And at this point Dave made his escape back to me.
So Dave hunkers down beside me and we both start to give this bruin a closer look and I think we both agreed at the same time he was a good boar. Now at this point the bear is in my sights and we are waiting for him to give us a good broadside shot So we wouldnt have to punch out a shoulder, So he's eating away and I say to Dave when he makes it to that little clover patch I am going to take him and he agreed. We wait another 15-20 minutes, and by this time it had already been nearly 20 minutes, For the bear to present himself for a good shot.
Finally the bear makes it to the clover patch and I tell Dave that I am going to take him, Dave brings up his Ruger 338 Just incase he tries to bail off, I placed the cross hairs just behind the shoulder- Give it a second and.. BOOM with a closely followed THWACK. The bear rears up and starts trying to bite at where I hit him then turns the opposite direction and starts to flee, Then Dave's 338 Barks and the bears does nearly 3 cartwheels and lands in a ball. A few seconds later we hear that same Chubaka growl that Our buddy Steve's bear did accept mine did it about 6 or 7 times, But after each one it started getting lower and spaced farther apart as he took his last few breaths.
After about 10 minutes of waiting with no sign of movement we walk up and go take a look, A quick poke to the bum and he was mine! I think he is a great bear for my first and I couldnt be happier and more satisfied.
It turns out my shot had entered just behind the shoulder destroying both lungs and part of the heart, Dave's shot had entered the shoulder went through the throat and got lodged in the skin on the other side. Bear was dead after the first shot and just didnt know it, Still I would like to say thanks to Dave for taking me for my first bear and putting him down before he made to the thick shi!t.
It sure was an easy haul down to the road on the wet slippery grass! Gutted him and got some pics and brought him back to Dave's. The bear went,
Nose to tail 6' 1"
Skull 18" and 4/16 and just about the ugliest hill billy teeth I have ever seen He lookes like the woods man from The Deliverance!
Pics to come tommorow when Dave uploads them from his camera.

Congrats on your first bear!

Great story. Good shot. I too have noticed geese high up in the slash. I soon realized that seeing geese often meant that bears were around because of 1. water and 2. new grass shoots. Geese and bears like the same foods. Duh. Anyways congrats and enjoy that bear burger.

What to say, Symon said it all and he was a joy to take out all those times. Very patient, waited for over half an hour to wait for the perfect shot. Easy to do when the bear is clueless on your presence. Enough chit chat. Pic time.

Old bear with bad teeth. Most of the molars were about 2mm above the gum line and he was missing alot of teeth. Not to mention the ones still there as we joked at the time. Looks like he could have starred in the movie Deliverance:wink:

Very well done Symon. You showed great patience in waiting for the right shot, especially for a young fella. If only the hunters I guide had that much patience!:D

Keep up the good work. You've got a bright future ahead of you, and a good start as well.
