Dark foreheads like this are not uncommon on older white tails. Also note white rings around nose and eyes and dark cheeks, definite WTD markings. In spite of the fact that the ears look big and the antlers are forked the antler arcitecture is definitely white tailed deer, downward sweeping main beams curling inward at the tips, long brow tine (one broke off). This is a fairly old mature white tailed buck with a couple of NT points (forks) in my opinion.

Note how dark the face is on this deer:

i have seen many mule deer around here with antlers that come around and inwards on the main beam, my youth season buck kinda did to. also i have not seen and whitetail bucks even close to this size in the area that i put my cam up, which is the cam this was taken on, and i hunt that area pretty much everyday. lots of big mules though, shot a non typical one close to there to this year. i will try and get some more pics of him to clarify but im sticking with mule

WT all the way, regardless of a fork on a the upper left, look at the Long Right Brow, the left is busted, smaller ears, the muzzle more pointed then blocky looking.

Whitey for sure.
Facial markings of a whitey...and, while antler configurations are not always reliable.....look at those brows. One is broken but the other is not. Not too often you'll find eye-guards like that on a muley.

There's always exceptions to every rule, but mulie main beams usually slope continuously upward to the tips irregardless of how much they curl in, while WTD main beams usually level out and curl inwards on a flatter plane (like the deer in the picture). Also, because we haven't saw big white tail bucks in an area doesn't mean they're not there. WTD bucks, especially these older dudes are very illusive, nocturnal, and are very reluctant to show themselves during daylight. If there's WTD around at all there's also big bucks around you can be almost sure of that. I can't count the times I've heard of monster white tailed bucks that no one (even the locals) knew existed until they showing up killed crossing a highway at night or hung up in a brabed wire fence.

fact #1 mulie bucks=white face.. #2 notice how the tines come off of a main beam. ( yes, the G3's are forked. not uncommon for mature whitetails. #3 whitetails (typicaly) have brow tines over 5 inches. mules not so often..

and mules with that size rack would have much larger ears.

therefor, whitetail forsure. hands down, no question. BANG. nice buck by the way.. only have one more day for rifle. better get out there

Whitetail. Another charasteristic of whitetails that is different thn muleys is the hair on the brisket between the front legs, whitetails don't generally have the dark or black hair there like most muleys do.

Take it from the guys who have been around the block so to speak and have seen a lot of white-tailed deer versus mule deer. You remind me of PGK :-D

Thats a white-tailed buck no question about it. Certainly an old one at that.

White-tailed bucks are notoriously nocturnal.....particularly the older mature bucks.

Now lets see the picture of the mule deer you correctly identified and shot :)

Whitetail to me, due to body size, ears, antler shape & mass.

For those of us saying this is a WT without a doubt what makes you say that? What identifiers do you use?

Whitie because of the antler shape and that huge brow tine. The ears look like whitetail ears, not nearly big enough to be a Mule deer. The body size also says Whitetail to me too.

I don't see any characteristics that make me think Mule deer.

To me, the "ears are smaller" than the size of a mule deer's, and the "white ring around the snout" stands out like a sore thumb. The mulies I've witnessed, have way different faces than this one. Even without seeing that big white tail, I've seen enough to tell the difference, and to me this is easy pickings. This is why I say without a doubt, this is a white tail deer.

I won't identify this deer by it's antlers, for the simple reason that this year alone, on this site , I have witnessed some strange looking bone on both WT and MD.......... BT too for that matter.

Have a look a this white tails face and then compare, I think they look alike.

Check out the second photo of this new thread by rifleman which shows a white-tailed buck and a mule buck buck lying side by side and you should see the differences and why the buck featured in this thread is a white-tailed deer. Antlers aside, the white-ring around the nose and the facial profile is the clincher for me.

id say whitey from the colouring coming further down the sides of his face almost to his nose, and the slender body, and also because of the size of the one eye guard, the other almost looks like it has been broken off. i dont think the antler configuration is enought to sway my decision to muley.

Whitie no doubt.

My first hunting season I had a 2pnt white tail in my sites for 30 seconds that I desperately wanted to shoot. All I could see was its head and front half of its body. At the time I did not know how to tell the difference between a whitie and a mulie by their face alone. I ended up watching it bound away to show me its white flag. Any white tail buck was open, 4 pnt mulie only.

Mulies, even 2 pnts have a white muzzle to their eyes, white tails have a white ring around their muzzle.

The eye guards (G 1's ?) are dead give away also.
