What kind of GPS do you guys use?

I'm looking at getting my first unit and have narrowed it down to the Garmin GPS62 and the Garmin Oregon 450.

Thoughts, opinions, preferences?

I got the Dakota 20 this year and think it is the cats pajamas. The touch screen is so freaking easy to use that it makes the 60csx and such seem way over complicated.

So I would lean towards the Oregon. I also have 2 buddies who have Oregons and love em.

Although the 62 does look very slick!

What are you using it for? Hand held or vehicle. Either way I use Garmin, the rhino 520s and 530s are great, you can broadcast your location to another unit in your party when you use the radio if they are using a garmin too. 3

Just stick with Garmin and you'll be OK. I wouldn't suggest touch screen if you plan to use it in the field although I am sure it would be fine navigating the concrete jungle.
I have a few Garmins that myself and a few employees use for work in the bush every day. After 1 year the screens are scratched beyond belief.
Just keep in mind that if your eyes are getting weak, get a big screen. If your eyes are still strong, get the smaller screen ans save $$ on batteries.

If you wear gloves touch screens become really pain as well.

Well I was thinking about the Oregon 450 but I've done some more research and I think the 60 CSx or maybe the 62S are a better option.

If you go for the 60 CSx make sure it's the CSX, not eh older C series - the newer ones are the CSx series and they have a way more sensitive chip/receiver in them. You can get a signal pretty much anywhere, whereas the less sensitive older chips/receivers are a pain in the ass and lose reception all the time.

The 60 CSX is a very good GPS. Rugged and reliable, and even moderately useable with gloves on. What else do you need?

The new GPS have come a long way from the older units. I have the Rhino 520 plus I purchased the Back-road maps for it - the maps are unreal - 100 times better than the books. they show old scidder trails and everything. Absolutely awesome plus the feature of sending messages and your location to other rhino users.

I know of a large hunting group that went out up off the Alaska Hwy in Sept. One of the guys got last in the fog. A sat phone was used to call for search and ressue - it got that bad. But they figured out their new Rhinos and found the lost hunter. Search and Rescue was called off. The hunter that got last has been in the bush for 60 years and is sharp as a whip - the absolute last person in that whole group I would expect that to happen to. The Rhino very well could have saved his life.

The Garmin Dakota/Oregon work fine with gloves. And the bottons are all plenty big enough to work with gloves on.

Also, buy some cheap screen protectors and your good to go.
