Was shopping in Nesters market in Whistler this morning and and inquired about buying some venison out of curiosity. $70 a Kg. Lucky I have a freezer full. Maybe time to lock the deep freeze on the back deck.

ONLY 70 clams a Kilo! BARGAIN!!
If I were to cost out the venison on my freezer at this point, the price would be astronomically higher!!

Bullets (one), gas - don't want to know, related gear - OUCH, time afield at 10 cents an hours - hundreds. Downright SCARY in fact. And while I do very much enjoy a good feed, that is the least of the reasons I am out there!

Lock your freezer!

Cheers,
Nog

PS: For ChriSakes don't let The Missuz see this reply!!

thats real cheap compared to that 175 .00 chukar I wacked. At 1/4 pound each that puts it up at the 700.00 / lb mark! whats the price of caviar these days. lol

Unless you live in an area that you can go out opening morning and shoot a moose off the side of the FSR, then hunting is rarely cost effective per pound. ALthough non trophy hunting and bigger animals can be pretty cost effective, I guess. A $2000 hunting trip resulting in 500 lbs of moose meat is only $4 per pound.

However, the most important aspect of getting wild at is that it's healthy, free range organic meat. Feeding your family with good meat rather than buying medicated feed lot crap from the grocery store has to be better for thier health.

Mind you thats $70 per kilo for the FARMED stuff. It probably came from New Zealand because thats where most farmed elk and deer come from.
Farmed is not the same as Wild in my opinion.

Like you fish for cheap fish :wink:

The irony is the venison at that market is farm raised and likely Fallow deer, so it's not even as good as the stinky boy Chappy and I cut today!!

It dosn't matter to me what it is worth, Its my vacation and my hobbie. And if I do not shoot anything I have still had fun. At any price.

I would hate to do the math!
Start with 3 months off work to fulfill my passion....and then add gear and expenses?????
Life is too short to miss out on any hunting time!

I know I have caught a lot of $500 steelhead in my time and I can`t even eat them. Thats a good argument for trophy hunting, brings the cost per pound down.

I hunt with my work truck (free gas) so my meat comes in at about $8/lb. Same with my fish, we go out with a guide at around $1000 per day. If we catch our limit ( 100 lbs of fillets per day) the trip pays for itself. We get a nice vacation, and we have enough salmon, halibut and ling cod to justify the expense of the guided trip. The wife is happy that we have meat in the freezer and I am happy to go out with my Dad/brother/buddies and have a great time. Everyone wins!

I disagree. If you spend $2,000 - $5,000 vacationing in Mexico all you'll get is a sunburn and a rash you doctor can't explain. If I'm hunting then I'm camping in the great outdoors (good) and there's the potential for meat in the freezer (also good). Cheaper than Mexico too.

On the flip side....If I wanted to.... and wasnt fussy about antlers.....I could probably walk from my house, with an old .303 my grandpa gave me, and whack a small mulie and a whitie, for the cost of 2 bullets ($2)
Cut wrap and freeze it myself.
The only costs involved would be license and tags and 2 bullets....but that would be no fun!

I guess the money is not the issue. We like to get out. I travel out of my region to hunt sometimes. Just nice to hunt different country occassionaly. I have however shot 20 deer, 3 bears and two elk off the back porch. Some I shot out of my office window. That is pretty cheap.
