It was a cold frosty sunny morning when we went out. Heading toward a favorite haunt for big mulies, a shooter mulie in anyones book crossed in front of us at that mule deer trot that covers ground like a bugger.
I got out and went after him and my two partner went to an oil road a half mile over. Had two chances to shoot but braething to hard for a shot of my knee at about 350-400 yds. He cut out to the east with me behind him, looked up to see Pat up on the hill raise his gun but in the wrong direction and straight into the sun. BANG- Whack definate deer down sound, but in the wrong spot.
He walked me into the deer as I couldn't see a thing for the sun, this is what I found, wrong deer

Got him cleaned up and headed north toward camp, looking over the bank there was a buck at the edge of a little block of trees. One look through the glasses and I told my buddy Blair to kill him as he was heavy and had a drop.
As per Alberta whitetail he took off at full tilt and into anouther patch of bush, we waited for him to come out which he did and was shot at but not hit and went over a hill at about 380 yds. I decieded to try and find him and the other two stayed up top in case he popped out.
As I got over the hill there was a patch of diamond willow about two acres in size and a great hiding hole for him. I circled the bush with little hope of him popping but gotta try, got to the bottom end and was looking around when I noticed a horizontal line in the trees. Knelt down and put up the glassses and there he was peeking out from twenty yards inside the bush. One shot to the sweet spot and game over :-D
He will go on the wall sooner or later, Grosses 163 6/8 non typical and has 26" and 25 1/2" main beams, his only real let downs are short G2s
He is 21 inches wide and the drop is 4 3/8" , total point count is 7x6

For shooting the wrong buck, buddy did alright!

He missed a solid 190 buck the day before and the tags only come every 3-4 years so he was pissed
The buck to doe ratio is almost 1 to 1 on mulies, we hunted 12 days 4 guys and would have to say welooked at 800-900 bucks with at least 200-300 in the 150" to 160" range. Saw a few good ones but couldn't bring it together, I let a nice 5pt walk that I know was in the 180" bracket but went with the idea that it would have to be the best buck I have shot or a meat buck at the end.
Here is a whitey that a 15 year old took and he also had a 190+ mule with his muzzleloader

Great white-tailed buck !!! Thats almost a twin to the one we saw on our Peace trip and even the fellow I was with would agree its pretty close with the drop tine.

Tough going on those 190 mule deer. They're really hard to come by but at least there's a silver lining in the numbers of deer you get to see in that open country to see another!!

The openess of that country sure would be fun for guys used to hunting timber mule deer!!
