View Full Version : Tag soup narrowly averted X2!

So today Myself, Chappy and Buckwheat were intent on one last trip for Chappy and me to cut our LEH doe tags. Left the house nice and early to get into a few spots we like in the lower end of 3-13. By noon we'd been in three of our favorite spots and saw nothing but 3 yotes and a slew of snow filled deer tracks. Things were looking like I should stoke up the soup pot. Then a hail Mary of an idea to head to Spies creek. The snow was blowing horizontal, -14C on the rear view mirror gizmo and some FUGLY roads. This was definitely our last chance.

Then out of nowhere we turn a corner and there's my doe, cliff on one side, steep hill on the other. Out I get clip, close, bang. My first LEH doe tag is cut and tag soup avoided for, me anyway.

Not huge, but as the kids did well in youth season we don't really need lots more.

So after a brief spell of cleaning and loading we're off to get Chappy a creature. Not too long after we start seeing lots of real fresh activity in the snow. Things are looking up. Then we bust 6 does high on a hill above us and again in a not so nice area. Chappy take 2 shots and things don't seem right. No sign of a hit, but we need to check to be sure. Off up the hill Buckwheat and I go. Some 15 min up on top and not a spot of blood. Deer are gone and not coming back. The hill was a tricky one to get up, but worse getting down. We get back to the truck and theorize what had happened and why Chappy missed. Then it's off to find them or at least try to head them off on a higher road we thought we could get to. Not today, those roads are done till spring.

So collectively we decide we should work the lower roads on foot and try to catch other deer working their way up as the 6 does were. Sure as shit Chappy's luck is up his @#$. We're heading down the hill back to the bottom when he slams on the breaks. What the hell?? Not 15yds to the left of the truck is one big ass buck. So in a spur of the moment I give him my gun and clip and off he goes. It seemed like forever till we herd the bang. He was playing hide and seek behind some big Doug firs. The rack Buckwheat got on Labour day was a decent one. It fits inside this pig. I only wish I had his kind of luck earlier in the season.

I'd forgotten I even owned one of those rags till he took off his jacket!! At least he didn't care if he got blood on it, his jacket was clean and in the truck.
