Hey just looking for some advice on gps's. I'm looking at getting my first one. Any suggestions from all you guys/gals would be great. Thinking $500 as the max but under would be nice. Would like one that I can put topo, backroad maps on. Thanks for your help

a garmin would be your best choice..... depending on what you want for features, would determine what model.............any questions give me a shout.

I have had a number of Garmin's and all have been great. My last one is the Rino530 and it works real good in all types of terrain and cover.

Type "60Cxs" into the search here on the site. More than enough and very popular.

Then go to "cpscentral" and get the best deal around.

unless you are proficient at GPS use, stay away from the units that contain the altimeter......... they will need to be calibrated EVERYTIME you change positions and do not have the unit on........... do not understand? message me and i will give you further details.

For an affordable first GPS I agree with Steeleco, the Garmin 60Cx, but also agree with husky 30-06, the electronic compass and altimeter will not get used very often, so drop the 's', also a little cheaper.

I am looking to buying a garmin GPSMAP or Rino. And then buying a digital topo map from backroad mapbooks.

I was wondering if anyone knew if the topo map can be put on either models?

Also is a topo map helpful for navigation or just a little bonus?

I find topo very helpful for navigation/scouting. It lets you know what elevation your at. It is great when you are scouting new areas and are wondering what the terrain will be doing up ahead. You get a better idea of where features like saddles and drainages are. All good stuff.

Do you know if the backroad mapbook digital topo map will go onto a rino or other gps?

Rino 120 and up can have garmin topo maps loaded onto them, i believe the 500 series rinos accept the backroads SD cards but ill let someone who uses a 500 series confirm that

the 60Cx is nice but no walkie talkie or buddy system to my knowledge like the rinos

i recently saw a garmin oregon in use and it was very nice has buddy system but no walkie, has a camera that logs the co-ords of the pics, very much like an Iphone

I just ordered the Garmin 450 from gps central. It's $100 off from the 25th to the 29th of November. It was just over $300 to my door! Thats cheap! I've done a lot of research on them this afternoon before I ordered it and the good out ways the bad by a long shot.

Okay, I know the garmin gpsmap has a ton of storage space and an sd slot. Has anyone ever uploaded maps with the usb cable. Because the sd cards are pretty expensive. And backroad mapbooks sell digital copies of certain areas, instead of the whole province. i see the value in the card, just might not need all the areas.

GPScity.ca just emailed me their specials and have the 450 on sale for $228. Though I think the 60csx for the same price is the better unit.

A buddy of mine has an Oregon 200 and I liked it so tried to buy one and they are out of production now so I bought the Oregon 450. I think it is awwwsom! It located satelites inside of a wall tent with steel poles, it even located them and locked on while in my pocket! While I was on the Ferry I was playing with it and it locked on while we were in the center lane on the lower deck, only a window a lane away and you guessed it, it locked on. I hunted in some very heavy tree cover and not once did it loose satelites. I have the Backroads maps and topos. This thing is great and easy to use, around $300 well worth it.
