Well after 4 years and 50 or so trips to the same spot I finally nailed a biggy. Story begins on Last friday, I went hunting alone and walked into one of my spots to discover a guy standing exactly where I wanted to be for first light. I snuck to within 30 ft of the guy and gave a little psssssst and as you know he jumped a bit. We wisper talked a bit and he told me he was watching a couple 4 pointers so i left them to him, he was a pretty nice guy. Well my mourning hunt was gone, checked a few more spots and saw nothing and went home and along the way my slave cylinder on my truck lets go, was able to shift with no clutch and not stop until i got into my driveway.....lucky kind of.
Saturday morning my kid gets me up at 4:15 am, I wasn't really planning on hunting but he did, so we took off in mom's truck out to the hunting grounds. Halfway there I realize my clips for my gun are in my truck, oh well going to be a one shot day. On the way up the mountain there is fresh snow and two sets of tire tracks ahead of us. One of the trucks take off down a road where were not going which leaves 1 truck ahead of us, I tell my kid I bet it's the guy from yesterday so I pick a different spot to set up for the mourning. Were in the spot and watching 6 does but no buck, as were watching and glassing other area's my kids tells me he see's some deer up on the hillside like a km away. I find a nice rest for my gun and use the 6500 bushnell to zoom in and have a look, I see 2 or 3 does and just then I watch a big bodied deer stand up, oh I new, I look for head gear and it was there. I study where the deer are and head back to the truck. We have to drive over to this other road which nobody drove up yet and find a place to park. We make a plan to get downwind and start up the hill, we get closer to where we think the deer are and start glassing big time, slowly moving forward and glassing, its been about 250 m. I spot the deer a little ways off from where we thought they were going to be, I get into a prone position and get ready, find the buck quartering away a bit and blammo, my one shot does the trick and he's down, was about 75m shot. We've all heard of ground shrinkage but that wasn't the case here when we walked up to him...When we got back to the truck to bring it closer to ther deer we ran into two other guys with there daughters, they ask me how's it going and I tell them what just happened and they ask if I need some help. I graciosly take them up on their offer and they unload their quad and drive up and drag that deer to the back of my truck, thanks guys.... greatest spread 28" and bases are 5"........ Hope you enjoy the pics.
