1. 200" mule deer

3. 150" blacktail

will be interesting to see how many fans of each species are on here.

No question in my mind. Blacktail Backtail Blacktail. Not only one of the hardest deer to hunt IMO, But a very large BT rack is about the nicest looking also. I friggen love these things.

But on this forum I am betting Muleys will win the poll

Blackies all the way... Ive got a few nice mules undr my belt, but after 23 years of chasing Blacktails, I will take the 150 freebee!!!:-D

I would say 200" mulie, even a 185" mulie would suit me fine. Ive only hunted mulies though so that's what is on my mind, I think I'd settle for any whitetail buck for my first one and then work my way up from there. And I don't know much at all about blacktails so I'd probably settle for a smaller one as well.

I have the blacktail monkey on my back lol to be honest I don't even open up the Mulie White tail or any other threads, I just search : blacktail, thats it lol.

I LOVE hunting blacktails. Normally I'd say blacktail for sure but at this point in time i'd love to take a 200 class mulie with big mass. Definately lacking one in the dead $hit room......

If they could all weigh the same I'd take the BT in a heartbeat, but I chose the big mulie, reason being, I think there's more meat, and that's my "main" reason for my hunting.

All 3 would be spectacular mounts but IMO nothing beats a BT with a huge set of headgear :)

That would be my ticket to hunt other species.

Personally , the first thing I ever killed was a 5X btail with my bow at 14 yrs old...never been soo freaked out in my life.
I think each person is very passionate with the species they cut their teeth on and retain it through their hunting years.
Although years ago while living on the island I used to dream of nov when it was time to go on the anual muley hunt on the mainland , the sheer body size and antler mass would well freak me out and fuel up the adrenaline big time.
Later on , I would also eagerly await for the return of Nov for our routine 'after guide season' whitetail hunt in northern Alberta and I thought I found my new #1 fall hunt.
Now , after years of guideing shit up north , harvesting numerous 'book class' species for myself , I am drawn back to blacktails with a vengeance.

I am fortunate to have some quite large examples of each species but the BIG mature blacktail is still the absolute most difficult to harvest.30 yrs later and they still have my absolute attention and give me adrenaline like nothing other.( just yesterday I was trembling with adrenaline, trying to control my breathing cause I had 3 does in front of me:shock: ...anticipating a 150 to 160" head to pop up at any moment)
Funny though , how often do you hear of guys on the mainland or back east or south getting amped up to go on their annual ' Island hunt' or lower mainland btail hunt??...hmm..not sure I even heard of this , lolol...probably better off , if everyone from north to south east province knew the excitement these buggers generate we would not have enough room for all to hunt em!
:-D

I voted for the mulie just cuz it would be awsome to break that 200" mark. I have never hunted blacktails, but my dad has, and he is now back down on the island, so I see a blacktail trip in my very near future, and I can't wait!!!!!!!!!

No offense to blacktail hunters but those bucks simply don't have the frame to get me excited at all. I passed up several 150 class Mule deer bucks this year without hesitation. Each to their own I guess....

Put me down for a booner Blacktail as well. These things are like ghosts,at least the big boys. The "hunt" itself is at the least the best part sometimes.

without a hesitation, BT's!!! I have spent the last 21 years hunting blacktails, but its not gonna make me choose to go the other way just because I have a few gooders to show for it! They are the prettiest, sneaky, fun to hunt deer out there!
To say I would rather chase mulies or WT's is like saying Im sick of good looking women and want a real nasty looking gal!!! LOL Mulies and WT's are like fat chicks and scooters!!!

I voted for Mulie. But it would have to be quantified... if it is high and narrow I am not a huge fan... but I would rather shoot a "smaller" deer that has more mass and is wide then just something that scores high.

I personally do not like the look of Non-typical antlers and most whitetails that score high have big stickers and junk that leaves alot to be desired IMO.

I have never seen a BT buck in legal shooting light during the hunting season... so I can't say I am partial or impartial to hunting them

BUT... a typical and wide Whitetail would be very high up there.

I did read something in the new fall edition of Big Buck Magazine that has alot to say about the trophy.

Jim Theissen, a B&C official scorer, wrote, "We, as hunters, cannot let the tape numbers set our standards for success, quality of experience, or enjoyment of hunting... keep enjoying a sport that we love".

This was written because a woman shot a 170 typical whitetail and it did not make any book, state, province or B&C. The tape measure did not do it justice!

Ha Ha.... I used to think the exact same way after hunting peace country deer for most of my life, I didn't think ANY deer hunting would compare.

They certainly aren't as impressive as a big muley or whitey but when you finally put a good blacktail on the ground it's a pretty rewarding experience.

I have the muley and whitetail on the wall, love hunting them both, but for pure fun and adventure, there is nothing like a big BT hunt.

Wet, thick, steep, rocky, slippery...did I mention wettest country in BC and they call that home. A good day is a few deer "bodies" sighted with maybe a glimpse at the head.

The one other deer I would love to get is a 225+ NT muley, I have an addiction to non-typical muleys that has not been scratched.....yet

Cheers

I've hunted all 3 and they each have their attractions. If I had time, I would hunt them all every year! :D I'm surprised there aren't more blacktail fans with the millions at the coast...

BUT, if I had to hunt just one, it would be big muleys in the alpine... just bein' up there lifts your spirits...

Awesome pictures, steepNdeep! Your post pretty much sums it up for me. I love all three variations of the deer family. Although I haven't hunted BT's as much as mulies or whitetails, it's the terrain in which mule deer are found that keeps me dreaming about hunting 12 months a year. If only I had more chances to get into the alpine this season... I'm looking forward to September already.

I'd have to agree steve you should have added a column for an island BT since the largest one ever harvested on Vancouver island grossed 147.5" Whereas I've held a BT rack from the mainland that grossed 154 and another that went 149. Need an extra column for us boys that are stuck on the rock.

200" mulie, the tail doesn't usually get mounted with the rack, so to the layperson a booner blacktail just looks like an average mulie.

I've hunted Sitka BT's my whole life But, I did have the chance to go on two Mulie hunts two years in a row. both years I connected with bucks WAY bigger than ANY BT I have ever seen let alone shot. and yet I'd take a 96" BT over 145" mulie anyday. Mule deer hunting(granted I might have just gotten VERY lucky two years in a row)just didn't do it for me. almost too easy. crazy big animals though!!
one of each would make an impressive wall

My dream buck, a 3x3 BT with brows that make book, with enough MASS to make up for a missing 4 point. that would be a cool looking buck.

I haven't seen many 4 points, but many bigs 3x3's. I think in some areas 3x3's are as big as they get; genetics i guess.
