So I was out for a 4 day wt hunt this past weekend and came across something that I haven't seen before. I found numerous fresh wt tracks with piss in them. Some had more than others but in all cases that I saw only the track was yellow nowhere else. So either its just a leaky faucet or a very controlled pee.

Now I was just wondering if this is a sign of bucks getting stinky by moistening their scent glands or is this a sign of a doe in estrus?

Sounds like they are pissing on their tarsals. They often do this as they make a scrape and let the piss run down their legs to the scrape. You see any signs of a scrape around the yellow tracks? You didnt eat the yellow snow did you?

Chinok is dead on the money.
Now when you shoot this deer you will remember not to touch the meat after touching the hide while skinning it.
And yes all them little hairs that fall on your meat while cutting up through the hide on the back legs are full of piss....... wonder why some guys have strong tasting meat on the plate at dinner time ???
Buck or doe it doesn't matter they both do it.
Good luck .......

That is exactly right. And it is important to use two knives when gutting/skinning. One gets used for the 'dirty work' and the other for the cleaner skinning and cutting.

Good luck and looking forward to seeing the pictures when you get him.

Just curious...are you sure that the yellow in the bottom of the track wasn't just water from the litter layer being absorbed into the compressed snow under the whitetails hooves? If the ground is not frozen under the snow, this can be pretty common. Depending on the circumstance the water in the litter can be yellow colored, but not usually a bright yellow.

I find that there is usually some dribbles between the tracks if there is enough pee being splashed around to soak the lower legs and hooves, so what you saw seems a little out of the ordinary.

Kody94 makes a good point .... not sure what experience you have in the bush but it gives you more info to think about.
If you find the bedding area, check for urine dribbles and see if you can tell if it was a buck or doe laying in the snow.

Now somebody has probably hit it on the head about what is going on. No doubt deer piss down their legs and it will end up in the track at some point but it doesn't all end up there and yellow piss can be seen sprinkled around as well. A lot of the time the tracks will fill up with water and take on the colors of the immediate ground around it, and if that earth is made up mostly of deciduous trees, or pine needles it can very well be yellow, happens alot. Here is the other thought, if ya don't quite know what it is , pick it up and smell it. Deciduous leaves does in no way shape or form smell like deer piss. There ya just learned something, put it in the bank.

I am 100% sure that the yellow in the tracks is piss. I picked some up and it smells similar to my cover scent which is doe piss. The snow was fairly deep where I was, I don't think there is a chance that it was the ground. The other funny thing is that I didn't see any dribbles nearby in fact I didn't find one piss hole other than in the tracks. Lots of scrapes though!
