Hi folks.

I have two small kids and I want to move out of lead shot for grouse hunting. I wish I could find them for the 410 but I am prepared to buy a 20 gauge (or 12 if that is required) Any suggestions about what steel shotgun shell I could shoot for grouse, who makes it, and where to get it?

Thanks,

R

just go to the store and look for #6 steel. Variety doesnt matter. I even know a guy who shoots 4 lead at grouse. I know 4 steel would be easy to find. 12ga ammo is easier to find then 20ga for the " weirder" stuff.

PS. I think you are doin this for not. Lead has been shot at birds for a hundred years with no health problems. and three generations of my family have been eating birds shot with lead and no problems.

but....! If you do find #6 steel buy lots of it, as it will be hard to find.

I use steel shot for my 20 gauge; haven't had any trouble finding it. Not at home at the moment so unsure of the brand. I bought it at Italian Sporting Goods in Vancouver. It's #6.

Go with the 20 ga. It's much more available, has better range and is certainly cheaper And stick to the lead shot for sure. I use 71/2 or 8 and it works just fine. Minimal wounding and very little damage.

I would go with the 20ga, had one for my first shotgun when I was younger. 410's tend to injure more than they kill anyway. Wouldn't recommend a 12ga for small kids, might have a bit too much kick and scare them off from shooting.

I usually stick to 6's, lead would be fine but if you want to spend the extra bit for steel it wouldn't make a difference really.

Maybe a box or two of 4's if you have nice big blues in your area.

Shooting steel, you're going up about double (or more) in price / box.

I shoot lead, both in 12 and now in 20. I shoot whatever I can get in a flat (usually between #6-8) as it's approx 65ish/250 shells, where as the cheapest I can get Steel is 55ish/100 shells. And the steel that i can buy by the stick in town is 3" #2's which is way to much for grouse IMO.
