View Full Version : A Little Bit Of Funk

I like muleys with some character and this guy definately has that. Been a damn hard season, with this being only the 3rd legal buck I've seen in almost 2 1/2 months of hunting. Burped him in this morning. I figured 15 yards was close enough. Was a pretty heavy bugger. Was close to 3 kms from the truck and I had to pack him out in 2 trips. With all the talk on here about nuts versus head I ended up packin out both. He should make for a sweet Euro. With some meat finally in the freezer, we'll see if we can get my boy on a monster before the end of the season.

Thats a wild set of horns for sure! If possible maybe once you get the skull cleaned up, take a pic of how that horn is growing out like that, I'd like to see if there's skull damage from a few years ago, maybe from fighting or a gunshot?. Congrats on a great looking buck!

Thats a pretty unique buck, would of been a cool shed to find!
Ive seen a buck recently, with a normal 2 point on one side, and 2 separate spikes on the other.....I figured Id get razzed for shooting a dink, but with all the "character buck praise" your getting....maybe I should of dumped him????

Matt,
I just pulled the double mainbeam buck shed out of the pile and compared it. Uncanny similarities except the weird mainbeam is on the opposite side. The bladed eyeguard is the same and the four point structure looks identical. Good chance you are right and he's just regressed now. I'll take some pics of the shed and the buck tommorrow and see what everyone thinks.
BTW, how did you recognize those trees? Yup, same spot as your 05 buck.

Mark,
Figured a few guys might razz me about shooting a dink. This year I wasn't even planning on hunting for myself. I thought it was going to be a given that my daughter would have cut my tag with her Jr. Licence. Didn't turn out to work that way with how rough our season has been. The freezer is mighty empty of wild game this year and I've always been a sucker for character bucks so it was a no brainer to pull the pin. Hoping to focus on my boy now as he hasn't had much hunting this year for himself. We've been focused on his sister the entire spring bear season and fall deer season. Hopefully we'll get some good snow before the season ends to bring the big boys in and we'll see if I can get the boy his first monster.

Good job on the "character" buck. Thanks for sharing and making him famous on the www.

How do you like that rifle sling?

Perhaps you could offer David H. to come along with you and your son to see how it is done in a GOS resident friendly area? Don't see too much sage brush in you field photo's.

That's the J105. I had an accident with it this year while washing it and had the old washer machine eat it. I thought she was toast but I got out the dental floss and needle and started sewing. Fixed her up real good. I was worried that the weight yesterday might blow apart my sewing job but she held together real tight. That pack has really impressed me. I've packed out more than a dozen critters with it. It really is ideal for what I did yesterday, a day pack that opens up into a big meat hauler. I could get to work right away instead of adding yet another long trip back to the truck to get a packboard.

The rifle sling is a Boonie Packer sling. A buddy of mine had one for years and swore by it. A few years back he gave me one too. It is a slick method of carrying your rifle especially when you have a pack on.

As for the sage, nope, I don't see that much. We are very much in the Interior Wetbelt here.

Here are a few pics of yesterday's buck with a shed off a buck I called the Double Mainbeam buck. MattB thinks maybe my buck is the double mainbeam buck regressed from old age. I'm thinkin he's right. The 4 point mainframe structure is almost identical just smaller now. They both have the same bladed eyeguards. The second mainbeam on the shed comes off the base the same as the weird beam on the dead buck. The only thing different is the side of the weirdness has switched. I've seen nontypical points switch from side to side on other bucks that I've watched over the years so there is nothing unusual about that. There is nothing wrong with the skull to indicate an injury. The front teeth are in real bad shape with several missing and others broken. Just genetics and old age playing the role here. I last saw the double mainbeam buck the winter of 05. That would put him at 10 or 11 now.

That does look pretty similar. There are a few distinct genetic traits in some areas. Drop tines, forked brows, bladed main beams...

Stevereally well done, what a funky looking deer and an incredible size body, what grain bullet did you use? Looks like some good eating for sure.

The deer here the cariboo are in the exact type of timber dark and quiet, although the rut closure should allow a lot more bucks to make it through, or make it easier for first Nations.

I don't think I've ever seen a freaky set of antlers quite like that… Well done

Tooley,
I have a lot of video of him from the winter of 2004/2005. His other side was a solid 4 point (75-80 inches) with a small cheater off his back.

Here is another look at the 104 inch double mainbeam side. Definately is indeed a buck you want breeding does. Jelly just has never seen buck live past 3 years old is all. :)

What does his meat taste like,he sure did have a big body on him,any guess to his weight?Great buck!:-D

dana
01-24-2011, 10:09 PM
Given that he's really old, I thought the meat might be a little tuff or at the very least tasteless. This is not the case. This buck tastes absolutely awesome. I've got 3 other deer in the freezer, a muley doe, a whitetail doe and another mature muley buck. All taste equally great. Could have something to do with the fact my wife is an amazing cook. :)
As for body weight, I've never actually hung a deer on a scale to get an idea of weight but I can attest to the fact that both trips of deboned meat were a good solid 75+ lbs each.
