Some may know....some may not but my Dad is a big time moose guy and right in there with all of the moose biologists. Has been filming and doing photography for years and had film crews do shoots with him in Riding Mountain National Park which is northwest of Winnipeg. Well he spends any spare time he has when not hunting, filming/photographing, just observing and following moose in the park; can't hunt in there.

Thought I would share these pics of a bull he took a week or two back; biggest he has ever seen in all of his years of chasing the donkeys around, hunting or 'observing'/filming. (only one other was close to this which he took a series of picture of about 20 years ago on the east side of Lake Wpg) Based on roughly 7 inches between the antlers he figures this bull would be pushing 65ish across; if it were shot it would be pushing a new provincial record. He followed it for a few hours one Saturday taking pics and vid....he said I think there are roughly 19 identifiable points on one side.

May or may not be the same guy as last year (first series of pics) but these were taken this past weekend. Again...he'd be pretty darn close to a provinicial record if in fact he wasn't; he may not be quite as wide but may make up for in score.

My Dad "hung out" with the big guy one day and then he paired up with this other one (big one is in the background); my Dad just walked along with them at about 30-40 feet while they went to get a drink of water. I swear I would have had more attention as a kid if I was a moose. :p

Hopefully "ilovemywinchester" won't be pissed at me putting up a few pics.

Wow, the mass on that guy is incredible, any guesses on the weight on that monster?

I was asking my Dad that as well; he's pretty good to hitting a weight of a moose to relatively close as he's been working closely with them for YEARS.

He figures in that 1500-1600 range....and likely lost some weight through the rut and breeding season.

MB grows some big bulls....both racks and bodies. I shot a 3 1/2 year old bull a number of years back on the east side of Lake Winnipeg that went roughly just north of 1600. He was one seriously big animal for his age.

nic pic what camers equipment does he use,

He uses some pretty high end Nikon equipment; he used to be a Canon guy but switched to Nikon a few years back. He's been taking pics and film of moose for years and has 10's of 1000's of photos both in digital and slide format. I would hate to even take a guess how many he has in total. :?

Video footage is ridiculous in the amount he has from way, way back right up to the last bunch of years where the footage has just got that much better with the quality of the equipment he uses. He was just mentioning tonight he had sat and watched some of the footage of these two moose from the weekend; and was very pleased with himself.

I certainly don't have the attention span to do what he does....he followed that big bull on his own for the bulk of the day Saturday and then back with the "boys" through the day on Sunday. When he's not hunting or stuck in the city....he spends tons of his time through all seasons in Riding Mountain Nat'l Park hangin' with the moose.

I have just got into it somewhat myself in the past year and a bit since I got a DSLR camera; I am useless with it though thus far. Was trying to do a bunch of good shots of humpbacks, orcas, greys.....and some sea lion/sea otter shots this past summer in Kyuquot and I wasn't overly impressed with my "skillset".:p
