Newbie waterfowl ID question here. I was out in Boundary bay this evening and had flocks of ducks zooming by me just before dusk. They were small little guys and I couldn't ID them because they were going so fast. Any clue as to what type of ducks they were? I didn't want to shoot at them because I couldn't ID them. But man there were loads of them and they were FAST!

If they were small and fast they more than likely are teals.

maybe teal, but pretty much impossible to tell by your description

Yeah, i just looked up teals and it seems like thats what they were. They were all over the place, flying in little flocks. And fast. They were quite small as well. Definitely not the sand piper things that are always flying around there.

Gonna suggest sandpiper but you already knew the difference sounds like teal though in smaller flocks real fast.

Well yea. The flocks were somewhat smaller (4-8 birds in a group). But the birds themselves were small. Like a mini-duck in a way. Probably half the size of a mallard.
I'll see if I can down one and put this to bed! Most definitely not a sandpiper, i know what those are.

if they sounded like jets zooming by then they were teals.

Funny you should say that, because they did sound almost like jets flying by. And they were in formation as well.

Could be teal....could be Goldeneyes....Bluebills/scaup.....bufflehead.....all small ducks that tend to fly in flocks and fly pretty quick.

Ooops....I see steelie said the same as I did.

I would guess buffleheads, most teal I see are in larger flocks, but they do kinda fit the description... gotta shoot one and find out!
