Well the weather finally changed for the better so a buddy and I decided to try hunt for a late season goat. On the ride in to the valley we located a nice billy but decided to pass on him due to the poor access. We sat and contemplated our options of getting a shot on this goat but decided that we would be better off looking elsewhere. So we walked up a drainage that we hadn’t been in before to look for a goat. After a few hours of walking and scanning the bluffs we located a billy on a rock ridge, which looked like we could get to. We busted up through the trees and worked our way out to a side slope to try and locate the billy. The goat was still bedded on the same rock at 385 yards. I got a good rest and waited for the goat to stand. I fired the first shot and hit him in the shoulder; I chambered another round and hit him in the shoulder again. The goat flipped over backwards and rolled down the ridge. We scrambled our way up to the goat and found him in the waterfall. I said a few thanks and we then started loading our packs. We worked our way down to the streambed just as the sun set. It was truly a beautiful day with fresh snow in the mountains and the first full day of sunshine we had seen in weeks. The goat had 9” horns. Here are a few pictures of our adventure.

Nice work . . . thanks for sharing. Gotta love the water to clean him up and chill him down quickly. Prime time for goat hunting right now . . . should be a few more posts showing up! Great shooting . . . what bullet and calibre?

Congratulations for a nice goat. Should be a great hide, nice and clean, and a good head if you want to have it mounted.

Nice billy, looks like great country to hunt in too.

How do you like your pack? Looks like a Mystery Ranch, very similar to mine.

you forgot to mention the joys of sidesloping through the devils club and sweating out 10lbs of water.

Ahh the crisp mountain air and the smell of burnt powder! Nice Billy, too bad about the waterfall, nothing like doubling the weight of a goat hide for the hike out!!

Congrats on a successful goat hunt!! Very nice looking country .
And really, what would a goat hunt be without all the sidehilling through devils club and losing 10lbs of sweat?! (I hope I'm about to find out!!)

gerrygoat and pearljam: The pack is a mystery ranch 6500. I have owned it for approx. 4 years now and wouldn't go in the field without it. It has packed everything from moose, elk, deer, caribou, goat and grizzly and has never failed me yet. It is stiff but once you load it up it feels great. Gerry that is a brute of a goat in your avatar.

Blacktailstaler: I probaly won't mount the goat because I have a good size last season billy on the wall downstairs. I just really enjoy the adventure of a good goat hunt.

The goat was in a LEH zone

Kalum: Yes you know the feeling of pulling devil's club thornes from your fingers and other places. Did you get all of yours our yet?

Dutch Ppoacher: Goat meat has very good flavour but it tends to be very chewy. I make mine into sausage so that it is already ground once for me.

I have some that are still festering in a rather difficult to reach spot, and there they'll stay untill nature takes its course:)

Definately a great Goat. Looks like some excellent country. It does look like the tips broke off, although it could be the angle of the shot? Congrats.

Good job on the goat. Goat huntin is a favorite for me as I love the country goats hang out in. I spotted my first goat in the west koots about 20 yrs ago while climbin for mulies. All I found was goats. Got my leh after a few tries and been chasin them ever since.

Hi Guys, the goat was taken in the Terrace area (Region 6). The horn tips were actually good and intact. It must be the way that the photo was taken.
