So I haven't been doing much hunting for myself this year. I had a long guiding season and am embarrassed to say that I have been feeling burnt out on hunting. I figured I would sit out October mostly and wait for November. So yesterday I figured it was time to give it a run on the local mountain for a blacktail. I got up about 6:00, sat on the couch and watched the news. It was a warm morning with lots of wind and I was pretty damn sure I wasn't going to see anything which is par for the coarse for me and blacktail. But, the fiance told me to get my ass out the door so I wandered up to an area I had always liked and seen good sign in. I watched for 45 minutes from a vantage point, saw nothing so cruised around the timberline. It started to warm up and I was totally disgusted so I headed straight back up through the logging. I got to a ridge and started seeing beds and trails and wouldn't you know it, I looked up to see a good buck with his head down sneaking out! He had been bedded in the middle of the slash watching me the whole time! I rubbed my eyes and took off for the top of the ravine he headed into. Sure enough he popped out and I was so excited I rushed the shot and made a very poor one. I watched him disappear into the trees and backed out for about 4 hours. I tracked hime for about 300 yards with good blood (bedded twice) and then jumped him in a thicket. No way was I going to be able to sneak up on him. So I left him until this morning, he went another 100 yards and died in his bed. Certainly not the quick, clean kill I was looking for. Lesson learned.

Great looking BT!!!

Love the bladed tines and character of him.

So how was the meat??? There has been lots of talk on here about leaving an animal over night, maybe you can shed some light on it with your deer??

Cheers

Nice Buck there Bruin. Good job on the stalk and an even better job on the decision to leave him be. Very tough to wait em out over night, probably the reason you recovered him. I lost my only deer to not waiting him out. I hit him high in the shoulder with about 6" of shaft sticking out. I rushed it jumped him a few times and never did recover him. I like how his back tines are bladed, very cool.

Thanks guys. Better to be lucky than good eh?! It was a huge relief to find him today. The meat didn't smell great though it cooled overnight. I am going to try and eat some tomorrow but it did have a sour smell. Unfortunately it may be dog feed if we can't eat it. Yes, I think it caught a piece of the liver, just behind the diaphram and a bit low. I did it gutless.
He was definitely thick in the neck but didn't have much of a rut stink. No does but lots of rubs in the area he was living and the alder bark was caked in his bases.

Smoker Blacktail there Bruin, for a guy that wasn't too excited to hunt BT this year you did real well, and with a bow too. Gonna mount that one? Looks like a prime mounter to me.

Congrats
