The wife and I went for a walk the other evening just to enjoy the weather. We were strolling slowly and talking softly, 'cause it was one of those peacfull times of the day. All of a sudden the stillness was shattered by the thundering of wings right at our feet! Not really expecting to shoot anything, it took me a few seconds to fumble an arrow from the quiver to launch at the grouse now sitting on a limb, twenty yards away. The G5 Small Game Head brought the bird to the ground and we soon had him in hand.

He's just a meat grouse and I know lot's of you guys wouldn't even look twice at him, but I'm happy to have meat in the freezer. Now I can go looking for "Mister Big"!

what kind of bowhunter doesn't wear camo when hunting the grause?

the most important thing is, you made it home safe

Wish I could kill a grouse while out strolling with the wife:mrgreen:. She shoots a recurve but only at stumps:neutral:. She will eat game but will not hunt it. I appreciate that she like's archery and I have come to an understanding with her not wanting to kill an animal (her personal choice).

Hope it was tasty:-D!

you shouldnt harvest those dink grouse. It affects the breed stock for us trophy hunters.

In all seriousness, nice shot and what are the colour coded nocks for?

Darn right, we had some attack grouse messing with our camp last week, but we were lucky enough to be able to defend ourselves as well. It's getting scary out there!

Good shot! Were you able to find your arrow? Ever shot Flu-flu's from a compound? I've considered trying but never have.

I hear the guide outfitters are pushing for limited entry and higher allocations for non resident only grouse hunters, any thoughts on this

A big body doesn't always guarantee you selected a mature grouse. Did you take the appropriate amount of time to age that bird?

Nice meat grouse. Where I come from, that would be considered a trophy.
Keep up the good work!

The title of this thread made me laugh

I guess the trophy grouse would be a big mountain blue? Tough as nails and big

I'd hate to see what you call a big grouse. I'd hang that on the wall.

Un-fortunately you have your bow in the picture... Disrespectful of the animal. (please remove my tongue from my cheek now)

EXCELLENT!!

Would you go with just a head mount or full body?

I sure as heck hope you took your time and made sure you weren't shooting a female...there's no excuse for that. Do you have any idea of how that would affect the population!?
Also, did your wife bring a gun as backup? You'd hate to wound one and then have to go in after it with just your bow!!

Oh no question head mount.

Oh no question head mount.

I agree. That grouse will make a great mount, but there's really no point spending all your money on taxidermy. Besides, you gotta hate having to redesign your whole house just to display your trophy.

I'd make my father do it. He needs to get back into taxidermy. I'd gladly remove my alarm clock from the wall to display that trophy

Don't forget to yank the tenderloins out before you hang it. They dry out pretty quickly.

Thanks for all the encouraging comments. I feel really privileged to have taken him in his own territory and on his own terms. A true trophy to me.

He must have been old, because he had no teeth at all. I was considering mounting him, but I may have botched the caping job when I stood on his wings and pulled. Too much adrenalin pumping in my veins to think clearly, I guess.

I cooled him out quickly and butchered him the same night. Should be some good eats!

Great job once again Ambush!!

What do you look for, when sizing up a trophy grouse? I've drawn on a few this year....but I'm embarrassed to say, I just can't judge them well.

The last thing I want to do is shoot a dink.

Haha, congrats! While moose hunting this year I to was shooting grouse. Better to come home with something. Usually harvested grouse in the early afternoon. They make a good afternoon meal cooked over a fire to get ready for the evening hunt.
