I am heading out for a hunt on the remembrance long weekend in region 5 wondering what is the best method of hunting at this time is it to hunt cut blocks and meadows with a blind while call and rattling them in or just walking down trails and maybe some road hunting to get from trial to trial? Just want some opinions thanks

Hello:

I live in Region 5 and there is a lot of road hunters around here during Sept/October. Many hunters are not getting any large deer and they wonder why. Too early for one and deer get wise fast to road hunters.

If you are hunting large deer, find some good looking does and wait quietly in the shadows for the big one to appear. Rattling has not proven to work for me in the region at any time when hunting Mule Deer and there are few whitetails around in the region.

I hunt the same time every November in the same place using the same method of hunting (I have benn hunting since I was 12 and I am 58 now). It takes me from 1 to 12 days to get my large deer each year. But it requires patience when hunting for 4 point or better and a little bit of work to find the right place.

This is a big region and some areas have less traffic than others. My advice is to find a quiet place away from road hunters where there is lots of sign and find a way to out wit the big one that is waiting in the woods to mount those beautiful does a few more times.

I am sure many road hunters get lucky, but it sure is not a real out of doors hunting experience like finding the right place to out wit the big one, make a clean shot and have a great story to tell.

Good luck.

Myself and a couple of family members were talking of heading up there for the nov 11-14 long weekend but after looking at the Hunting reg book, it looks to me like there isn't a season open for mulie's at that time. Could be reading something wrong, but that's what it looks like to me.

I would read the regs. Mule deer closed from November 11 to November 21 for all of Region 5.

When I hunt in Novemeber I alway think of the movie "Braveheart" and hunt similar to how they go into battle: I paint my face, where a skirt, and run through the bush as fast as I can screaming.
Hope this helps.

Glad somebody brought this to your attention.
Don't be discouraged, thinking back, I always saw more towards the end of November in 5. Good luck.

that would be a hell of a mistake.. along the lines of, "this is looking great, no other hunters, no pressure..."

technically the season opens back up on the 21st so the closure is the 11th to the 20th.

Region 3 is open. The closure in 5 is new for a rut period. Gives the bucks a chance at makin love without bullets flying over their heads during the nasty.
Should make for good hunting come the 21st.

Just spending time in the bush is considered hunting. Thats why they dont call it, Out Shoot Things. Sometimes your better off not having much of a plan. But know whats open in the area for shure..........
