We had a great moose hunt this year. It was the first moose hunt for my youngest daughter and nephew, both 17. Alison and my Dad and I made 5. Fortunately dad bought a new wall tent this year so we all fit, barely.
We saw a bull on the way in but not in our unit, and when we arrived at the lake we were hunting it seemed like everyone had moose down in the last few days.
On our first trip up the lake with a boatload of stuff we saw another bull on the shore.
The sun was directly behind the bull and as we tried to change the angle of approach he disappeared into the bush.
We should have made a bettor effort to get this guy as it was the last moose we would see for over a week.
We hunted hard in the wind and rain but the moose just weren’t moving.
On about the 7th day the kids were ready for a camp day and some grouse hunting, so Alison and I headed up the mountain. It was blowing and raining turning to snow as we got higher. We were following the creek and walked into a bull at 20 yds in the thick willows. He was downwind and one wiff and he was gone.
Well at least he was walking around.
We continued to climb higher giving us a great view of the burn we were hunting.
I was cow calling every now and then.
We climbed above the last bench just bellow tree line and over to our left and bellow us on the bench was a bull standing looking at us with his paddles covered in snow.
I passed Alison my gun and told her to take him but she couldn’t get a steady shot from there and her hands were to cold . I took the rifle and she moved over to a different spot to see if it was a bettor spot to shoot from. No luck. The moose stood there as she moved around trying to find a good rest with a clear view. He was a fare distance away. Finally he turned broadside and started to move so I shot him.
Down at the lake the rest of the gang heard the shots. I radioed them and they headed up with packframes.
We de-boned him and were just loading our packs when the kids arrived. It was great having all the help to pack the meat out. We all had a great time and the kids are hooked.
The fishing and grouse hunting were great.
