Hey guys. I finally shot the first deer of my life yesterday! And what an incredible feeling. My cousin and I took off into the hills North of Kamloops for a shot at either a muley or whitie. It was raining and amazingly there were no other hunters in the area. The deer were all over the place! Some stood and looked at us, while other darted this way and that. I had a shot at a nice spiker early in the morning and missed at only 30 yards! Buck fever is a real thing!!! Needless to say, I was upset and thought that maybe this hunting thing just wasn't for me.

On our way back down the hill with only a few km of road left, we took a turn down a small road which my cousin had seen does on an earlier outing. As we crept into a huge open area, I see a buck way off in the distance and the opposite end of the clearing right at the treeline. I estimated his distance to be 250- 275 yards. He was so far away, he didn't even turn to look at us. I found a good solid rest, and let one go from my .270 Winchester Model 70. WHAM!! My bullet shattered his shoulder and he started limping pretty good but didn't go down! He kept climbing the hill towards the trees. I fed another bullet into the chamber and let another one go. That was all it took. It wasn't until we got up to him that we realized that I'd hit him in the lungs. He went a few more meters and then fell.

I was so excited, I could not contain myself. I have included a few pics to help tell the story. Now I just can't wait to get back out there and get my whitie!

I'm a biology teacher so I love that stuff! Even after I got it home and got him all skinned and aired out, I was studying all the muscle groups. So cool!

LOL, the guy I tagged my bear with was gagging and dry heaving the whole time gutting and skinning, all the while my lady friend was right in there like a dirty shirt. Funny as hell

Congrats on the buck!! I hope to join the ranks with my first buck soon

From now on if you bump into an animal too close, like say, 30 yards, just slowly and carefully back yourself up until you're about 275 yards away...it appears that's an easier shot to make for you! ;)

Good job.

Good job.

Sounds like a good idea! After I missed that short one, I thought "What the hell?" I think I aimed a bit high and the bullet just rose right over his back. I didn't think about the trajectory after it leaves the barrel!!

But on the long shot, I had time to think about it first. I aimed for head height and the bullet fell perfectly into the sweet spot. I keep replaying the moment over and over in my head. It was just so awesome! Thanks for all the comments guys!

Coolio! It's good to see a lot of new hunters these days. I have noticed an increase of new adults getting into it.

Thanks for all the congrats guys! To make it even better my dad and I butchered and wrapped the deer all on our own. There's something about spending time with your dad while you are cutting and wrapping game that brings you together.
