Hey Kamloops guys,

Is it too early to start rattling for Mule Deer early next week? (Oct.25 - 30)
I am not looking for any monster mulie, just a small meat buck. I need to fill my mulie tag by the 31!

Do you think the small bucks will be interested in the rattling and grunting this early?

Thanks!

So driving home today go by a big farmers field two of the biggest four points i ever seen locked up going at it. First time in my life i have ever seen this and i mean they were going at it. But to tell you the truth ive heard of rattling working and not working. So i guess it really depends on the deer and what there intentions are. cheers

Your better off raking a tree with a shed antler than rattling for Mulies much better results!!!!!

I use a rattle bag and a doe bleat. Pain in the but carrying antlers around, The rattle bag works fine.

I tried rattling but the buck and his doe and another smaller buck took off in the opposite direction. That doesn't mean I won't try it again. Recently, I knew of a buck in a ravine below me. I raked a stick against some branches and he came out into full view within a few seconds.
If it's a small meat buck your after, I suggest you try roadhunting (gasp ) some cut blocks (where you know some deer hang out) right at 1st light. The little guys are pretty stupid and they just stand there and watch you when you come driving by. The reason I suggest this is that if your too quiet and the deer don't know your there and you can't see them, then you will miss them. A little noise will cause them to raise their heads or stand up, and those huge muley ears give them away like right now.

Happy hunting.

Mulie bucks don't respond to the rattle the same way as Whities do, IMO.
Actually, not many traits are shared between the two at all.

The bucks are still sparring so rattling should be good right now. There is very little fighting when the rutting starts. You can get a fight when two bucks that have never met each other come across the same hot doe. This has been the way I have learned it.
