Hi,

Me and my buddy are trying to get his girls (aged 9 and 6) into hunting. We usually do longer trips up north earlier so his girls aren't able to come. We were thinking about taking them to Merritt for a couple days b/c it's close to Vancouver. Would anyone be able to point me in the right direction to try and look for a deer and maybe some grouse?

Much appreciated,

Woodpile

Grouse will be real hard this year, but you could try going east from Merritt to the top of the connector and pick any number of roads off of the 5A.
Mizzazula lake and area can be a good place to start.

Thanks. Is it a bad grouse year around there?

Bad grouse year everywhere I've seen so far. They're out there, but nothing like past years, not even close.

I've seen on average about 1 per day since I took the kids out in youth season. Only one was acting normal and didn't take off when it first saw me.

Ive been pounding that area for moose a few times lately, not much to be seen, game is hiding deep in the thick crap with the warm weather!
Not an easy area to show kids some game!

Grouse on the other hand, I see almost everywhere, no matter where Im hunting!
Seen close to 100 one day while hiking down a mountain from the alpine!

The thing is we only want to go for one or two nights with the girls to introduce them to hunting so we don't want to travel too far. Should I be taking them to another area to see some game?

I have seen lots of grouse, thought it was a good year for them or maybe I have just been lucky.

Thats good to hear. I saw lots of them up north this year. Wasn't too sure about southern BC. I think I'm still going to try to find a spot around Merritt to take the girls to possibly see some deer and/or grouse.

I shot 22 nice big fat juicy ruff/blue grouse and let just as many go on one trip in the middle of Sept but then moved into an other area and they were very scarce...

So I'll say depends on where you are.
