View Full Version : Cow or Calf?

I was expecting a cow to be there for comparison, just like in the regs!

I figure this is a calf. It looked to be about 5 feet at the shoulder? Couldn't tell for sure, as it stayed in the water the entire time. And it sure seems to have a short snout.

But this is the first time I've seen (what I think is) a calf alone. Only other thing that looked "different" was the ruffed up hair on it's back.

Any opinions?

That is a bull calf, and it's mother was probably shot, hit by a vehicle, or getting her hooves done  but usually not out of sight or very far away! I would have dumped him over for sure if I would have seen him. He should survive, if not mother nature will feed the wolves again! Moosin

Thanks for the responses.

I've spent a lot of time in the bush, but I'm just learning to hunt. And I'm discovering that I've got a lot to learn.

Don't matter how long you have been in the bush, you will learn something about nature every time you are out. Hunting will get you out in the woods more now!! Moosin

The only real way to sure if it's a Cow or Calf is tenderness!!! The Cow will be tougher than the Calf, if you don't need a knife at the dinner table for cutting your thick Bar Ba Que'd steak cuz you can cut the meat with your fork, it's a Calf! If you have to chew a big mouth full of steak more than 3 or 4 times, it's a Cow!

Illegal animal!

Moose - Spike-fork Bull - means a bull moose having no more than two tines on one antler. (Includes tines on main anlter and brow palms which must exceed 1" of antler) Does not include a calf.
Cleary you see this is a calf moose with not enough antler. Know your rules before pulling the triger!!

definate bull calf

When in doubt, don't shoot!!

If that was me, I'd have shot him during a legal calf season. Good eats that are hard to beat!!

Looks exactly like the calf my youngest son got for his limited entry youth hunt. Had the furry nubs too. Mom took off with an immature bull which didn't show himself until after the calf was down.

In defense of Hartcore, he was referring to spike bull season, not calf seaso. in his reasoning of this because the other person mentioned to dump it because it did have buttons. If a person was to dump this calf in spike only season because of those buttons, that is illegal, but totally legal in calf season.

As I said, I never considered seeing a calf by itself.

Buttons aren't legal unless they are over 1" which they are not in this case.

Unless moose are standing together for comparison in their size, it can be difficult to judge when standing alone for a lot of people ..
Jel ( Need comparisons ) to help judge some times .. unless real close or with bino's like rinho's

if it has more then 1 inch of visible bone it counts for spike fork.

Check the Definition of a Spike-Fork Bull:

Moose - Spike-Fork Bull - Means a bull moose having no more than two tines on one antler. (includes tines on main antler and brow palms.) Does Not include a calf.

so we as hunters need to start "carding" our quarry in order to keep it legal ? honestly officer , he said he was a spike bull , how was i to know he had fake id and was really just a calf? silly hairsplitting in my opinion.

That is one tender looking little Moose! Now, if you shot that guy and said it was a spike fork moose you'd go to jail and be Big Black Bubba's bitch for a year or so! But, if you wacked it during Calf season and didn't give me a couple steaks and a few 25 pound roasts you could say good bye to any more expensive presents from me at Christmas, Buddy!!!

amazing, a year later and it is STILL a CALF moose,,, lmao

hasnt grown a bit in the last year,,,,,:?

even more amazing how many persons with a resident hunting license can not identify wildlife correctly,, even the MOST basic

and even with a close up, clearly identifying the small "nubs" between the ear and eye, ???
clearly a bull calf, probably in someones deep freeze or wolf poop by now!

Wow really ??????????

While the animal "appears" to have lumps on its head, it in no way is a bull or an immy bull.

no problem, as I have killed about 40 moose under my own tags, and guided another couple hundred moose hunters to their successful moose kill on their paid hunts, I CAN identify moose pretty dam quick,

as for you ? "peter-pooper"? you DO for CERTAIN have a picture of a Squirrel in a cage, for an avatar,,,,,,,,,,lol
