Is October 20 too early to close elk season in R4E and R8? It used to go to Nov 15 in R8.

Actually FD, I think its open too late. Another year or two and there's no reason why they shouldn't be able to have the September season through.

I know the concern is hammering them on the winter range, but if the season remained 6 or better (for the "post migration" period anyway), I can't really see any conservation concern.

If the season was opened up to 3pt or better (even for a portion of the season, prior to Oct 15), I suppose the other concern would be maintaining a decent bull:cow ratio.

Just my "off the cuff" thoughts.

Absolutely not... The bulls are fu*ked out and the bigger ones are now alone. Small bulls, not so much. If you haven't got one by the 20th, too friggen bad.. Enough stress and chasing them around, plus, sleep in and enjoy life..!!!! Your too friggen late if your still looking to kill an elk, get over it and move on..You're related but stupid question, no??? As for a conservation concern, imagine a big snowfall and cold weather and the season set till say November 15th... Not good for the bull population and I believe there would be a conservation concern.

I don't think there's any left now in the WK so it probably doesn't matter how long it's open for.

I would love to see much longer bow only seasons for elk and many other big game.

Before the last massive slaughter, caused by that early storm.
The one that chased all the elk down but didn't effect the mulies.

Pre-90s, IIRC.

Perhaps R8 is more suited to a longer season than R4E, as most years, R8 has little to no snow well into November these days.

I'm sure you would but you should hang you friggen bows up too. You had an early season and a full general season and you need/want more??? Your done, stay home and paint the walls!!!

we got snow here were i was hunting today

and i say no out of the heard we have up here in this area the bulls have been hit real hard already this year, heard the guys at the hunting stores even complaining and questioning next year

elk in reg 8
at least 3 points
1,9,10,12,14 Sept10 - Nov 15
4, 7 Sept 10 - Oct 31

bighorns
in 1 and 9 , 3/4 curl for Sept 10 - 18

mule deer any buck
12-15,23,24,25 Sept 10 - Oct 31
1-11, 21,22,26 Sept 10 - Nov 15

'99 was all different
