Earlier this summer I borrowed a trail cam from a friend, and set it up on our property in hopes of catching some pics of a bull moose we have been seeing. Never did get pics of him, but I got a very blurry partial pic of what looked like a nice whitetail buck. So as deer season got closer I told my friend about the deer and told him, for letting me use the camera he should come out and try for this buck (he declined since I hadn't got one either). I moved the camera and set out some grain and salt. over the next month and a half I had a whitetail doe and twins come in daily ( got over 800 pics of them!!) But no bucks!!. I started thinking maybe this guy had just been passing through. then one night he finally shows up on the grain, he came in almost every night for almost 2 weeks, always between 11pm and 3am. So I kept going out and sitting, and waiting, hoping he would show up during daylight. Well thanksgiving ended up being my lucky day. I went out and checked my camera in the morning and seen pics of him from mid afternoon the day before! finally. So I convinced the hubby to watch the kids and cook supper while I headed out for the afternoon/evening. I got out there around 4pm. I wasn't sure if I was wasting my time since the wind was pretty gusty, but though what the heck. So I hunker down under a spruce tree about 85yds downwind to wait. around 5 the doe and twins came passing through, then gone. They returned around 6, and stayed to eat. At about 6:30 the fawns started acting a skittish and the doe started watching the bush behind her. Could this be him comming? my heart started to pound in anticipation. sure enough a few minutes later he came walking out of the bush! I watched him for about 10 min before he gave me a good broadside view. I line up the 270 and squeeze..bang, he jumps and runs.#$%@ I hit a little high. I listen and hear him crashing through the bush then nothing. so I wait a few min then grab my rifle and pack and start off. I checked over the spot where I shot him. yep good blood trail to follow. so I start off following the trail..then loose it about 20 yards away..crap, by this time the light is starting to fade (now would probably be a good time to say I'm scared of the dark lol). Anyways I keep looking, straight ahead is a major deer trail, and I think to myself no way he ran down that he probably just crashed straight through, but I'll check anyway. sure enough, back on the blood. Found him about 50 yards in the bush piled up around some poplars. Had to call the hubby in to help since he was too far in the bush for me to drag out by myself. So with his help we loaded him onto the bike and took him to the yard to cleanup. all in all I am one very happy camper!!

having trouble getting pics up (sorry)

That is a great first whitetail, way to go and good detective work with the trailcam, they are a great tool for figuring out the timing of visits to a spot and you nailed it! A real beauty!

Wow, that's a huge Whitetail! You earned that deer! Way to stay with it and put in the hours...and you held it together while you waited for a good shot angle. There's a lot of veteran hunters that wouldn't have been able to do that! Congrats on a great accomplishment!
