Family affair...

Me and my 2 sons on our last hunting trip Monday Oct 4/10 shot 2 two point mule deer bucks...

This is the first time my 3 1/2 year old son Jaiden was part of shooting/cleaning/dragging deer he is usually so noisy as we walk thru the bush that he scares all of the bucks away...

He is one happy little guy...

Rifles left to right

50 + year old Husquavarna in 270 Wby + 140gr TSX @ 3230fps
16.5" barreled T/C Contender carbine in 22LR match chamber OAL = 26 3/8"
18.6" barreled Robinson Arms XCR-L in 6.8 SPC non-restricted = 95gr TTSX @ 2825fps

The last 3 deer I have shot were 4 points and the toughest/gamiest meat I have ever eaten or tried to eat decided to get go for quality meat over size of antlers this year... :-D

How do you like that XCR-L for deer hunting?

I have never had much of an interest in any kind of semi-auto rifle for hunting before levers/bolts/single shots have always been my rifles of choice but when I saw my first non-restricted Robinson Arms XCR-L and held it @ Reliable Gun & Tackle in Vancouver I was amazed at how nice it felt and how easy it was to disassemble the controls (safety/slide release etc) are all designed to be easy to reach and operate.

I bought it in 223 even though I have never really like the round but then I started learning about the 6.8SPC spec 11 cartridge/chambers and decided to bite the bullet and ordered a conversion kit so I could hunt deer/black bear with the XCR-L figured it would be kind of cool to try anyway...

I have found the rifle to be extremely accurate and fun to shoot my 95gr TTSX (Barnes designed this bullet for the 6.8spc) 2825fps loads are so accurate that I will not hesitate if conditions are calm to shoot out to 300 yards with this combo on deer.

Interesting comments on the XCR-L, thanks... The reviews are solid for that AR platform and hunting. The design makes so much sense. Thanks for the info!

Your boy will remember these trips well into his own hunting career. Nice deer guys.

Actually it is not an AR platform which are restricted more of a combo of the best of both the AR-15 & AK47 designs which is why it is non-restricted...

Here is a couple more pics of the XCR-L for those of you wondering about it.

Scope is a VX111 4.5-14X40mm 30mm tube Varmint reticle side focus mounted with Leupold PRW rings its mounted as far forward as it is due to the 13" length of pull butt stock, FYI I'm 6'3" and have heard from others that must be a lot shorter than me that the stock is to long for them.

At first I didn't really like the shorter butt stock but now that I have gotten used to it I will not change it due to being so fast to mount the rifle to my shoulder.

I also have a 223 conversion kit for this rifle that includes a barrel/bolt/deflector/mags (deflector = little black plastic piece you can see at the rear of the ejection port in the bottom pic) next week my components so I can have two complete upper receivers are supposed to arrive so all I will have to do is remove a snap ring/pin pop the receiver off switch receivers and re-install pin/snap ring and I can be shooting a different cartridge.

223 is a lot cheaper to load/shoot than the 6.8spc & this is the most fun I have had with a rifle in years...
