I wonder how often this happens and we arent' even aware of it?
Last night, we were set up overlooking a ravine, which had a old logging road winding around the top of it.
We had spotted a good bear, on the other side of the ravine, abotu 200 yards away, feeding on the grassy slope. He was ducking in and out of cover, and we were hoping he woudl stop long enough in the open to get a broadside shot at him.
FInally, he came out, into the clear. Now wait until he turns broadside.....Scott, the shooter was lining up on him, ROb and I were watchin through our binos.
All of a sudden the bear pops his head up, and bolts - he is GONE....
We try to figure out what had happened? Teh wind was in our favour, he hadn't seen us, couldn't hear us....Mayeb the cooling thermals dropped our scent down to him?
The naswer was clear as we walked out and ran into 2 other hunters, who had said they saw nothing...They had been walking on the road at he top of the ravine, and their scent must have dropped down to the bear, and spooked him.
Tehy never knew the bear was there, and it of course I wonder how often do you think it happens to even expeienced hunters? I bet more often than we like to think...
