Last year after talking with a friend we decided to put in for LEH in region 7. We were planning a week long trip. I was the only one of the group who ended up getting drawn for this particular region. Then fall came and two of the guys in the group started a new job and could not get time off so the week long trip got cancelled. The plan was then for me to come visit them on weekend and we would go out for day trips.
I had to cancel the trip two days before I was supposed to go because of work. The Friday I learned that i would not have to work after all.
We went out early Saturday morning and one of the guys called in a cow. Other than the cow we did not see anything all day except for a few chickens. Near the end of the day we were back in the spot where the cow was seen in the morning. We called some more with no success. As we were about to leave a couple of older gents drove up and stopped to talk. One of the guys I was with mentioned that we had seen a cow here in the morning.
The next day two of us went out early and decided to go to the same spot again thinking that if there is a cow there is most likely going to be a bull in the area. We parked a ways back for where we were going to sit and call and were walking up when the two older gents drove by heading toward where we were going to set up. I figured they were going to stop at the spot we were heading to. Turns out they drove by it.
We got there and started calling and not long after our first set of calls we could hear a response way back in the bush. Two more sets of calls about 10 minutes apart and we could hear him raking on a tree and hear his grunts really well.
He poked his head out of some willows and was looking in our direction. He would not come out any further so my buddy did a couple of grunts and raked some willows in front of us. He then came out enough that I was able to get a good shot in.
Then the work began.............................
Was my first bull moose and was the first time my hunting partner and myself had called one in.
He is 48 ¼” wide with drop tine.
