what kind of illumination does everyone use? i've seen big 1-2 million spotters but they don't last that long. little beams that shoot 10 feet infront of you but last all night but aren't exactly bright. looking for something in between.

I like the newer LED maglites, I keep a big one in the truck.
Mostly use a headlamp though.

I have a couple of LED head lamps, and one that clips onto the hat visor. I find those the best for working on animals or anything in the dark because the light is pointing where your eyes are. For just spotting, I too like my Maglight LEDs...very bright and because of the low voltage needed, they do last very well.

I take two headlamps when I am campin off my back. They save holdin a flashlight in your teeth like I did for years. I have a petzyl with about 40 or 60 lumens, cant remember, its green and brighter than most I tried. I keep a little minimag in the truck and I have a little led light on my keychain.

I think everyone should have a headlamp. They are so useful, from in camp to gutting and quartering in the dark. Leupold makes a wicked flashlight now that is compact and much brighter than my mag light. It also lasts a long time. If you can afford it, its great for tracking and what not.

Sounds like led is the way to go. Headlamp for field dressing and mag for finding your way on the trail, or off the trail more like it.

I have the Tikka XP2 made by Petzl. Get the carrying pouch for it at the same time and a spare set of batteries will fit with it into a small, very light, compact unit . Check the reviews. Won't need a hand light with this beauty.

Yes a headlamp is the way to go, my choice is surefire minimus or some thing like that, 1-100 lumens ajustable 6 hrs on 1 and 1 on 100, but 100 is very very bright, batteries are 3 volt and small enough to carry a few.
