Theres a saying..."If it wasn't for bad luck...I'd have no luck at all".
Well that saying is very true when it comes to my Dad and deer hunting
He shot his last mule deer 58 years ago when he was a young man working on the Douglas Lake Ranch. I dont think anyone can match that drought !
Since then he joined the Canadian army (PPCLI) and served for 10 years in Canada and Germany. He left the army and married. A couple of years later they had me. They must have decided they had the perfect child because they did not have any more.
Dad took up hunting again after we moved to BC from Ont. He took me on my first hunting trips and we had great times but no luck.
I got my first deer years later in my 20's. Dads luck continued but he always liked the "hunt". I was able to get him on to deer but for one reason or another no deer ever made it home with us. Until today !
I had been watching a couple of bucks cross the same area 2 days in a row (Dad did not want to come BOTH days). So we set up and waited. And waited, and waited. So off to try another area up the road. Right away we see 5 mule deer does/fawns but no bucks. Go figure. We continue down the trail and see 5 more mulie does/fawns at 15 yards. I saw 17 in the same area the day befor. We get off the quad for a closer look. I go back to get the quad and BOOOOM. I thought Dad shot one of the does. But I see a buck running 35 yards away. I yell to Dad "did ya get him"? Then the buck stops and tips over. Dads drought came to a end. :-D
Im so happy for him. Ya couldn't wipe the smiles off our faces.
