Weeks of apprehension, canceled trips to visit Good Buddies, a few hunting days dropped, and the whole while watching Asuilu swell to such mammoth proportions she began to resemble a beach ball with legs! Pins and needles around this gal, who although she VERY much loves people, began to show the odd sign of hormone levels shooting up, and the famous protective nature of all Mama's. Every day The Missuz and I checked her constantly, amazed at just how FAST she was getting to be so bloody BIG! Literally nearly expected her to EXPLODE!

Late in the evening yesterday, Asuilu became more restless than usual, and started a search of hiding places through-out the Hacienda. Recognizing that, we shut the doors to all expect the main living area upstairs, and access to the spare bedroom where we had set up her "Birthing Area" - a kiddie pool lined with soft blankets. Despite our expenditures and effort, she exhibited no interest in that which was designed for the purpose...

As the evening wore on, she settled down a lot, and seemed very content to snuggle on the sofa with My Lady (can you say we sort of spoil our Companions?). Later still, everyone nodding off, we assumed this was yet another False Start. So, as usual we headed off to bed, and as usual both our dogs settled in on either side of our bed for the night...

Jump forward to 3:00AM. A low and ominous growl digs it's way through my unconscious wanderings. Huh? A little firmer this time, followed by a yelp, and the sound of Amaruq desperately trying to dig his way out - right through the door!
Oh-Oh!
As my mind struggled to come to terms with what was rudely pulling me from slumber, I suddenly realized that Asuilu was ON THE BED! Oh No!! That got me going, on with the lights, The Missuz wiping sleep from her eyes and staring wide-eyed in Amazement! aYup! Too Late! already there was a little ball of fur, looking quite like his Papa, wiggling as Asuilu cleaned him up vigorously! ON THE BED! EEK!

I let the Papa out, and he galloped away to a safe distance to stand guard and whine incessantly about getting the boot. Tried to entice Asuilu off the bed, hoping to get her into the area we so carefully prepared for this moment. NO WAY was she moving! The look in her eye stopped me dead in my tracks, and further attempts were immediately abandoned!
It's only a comforter and sheets murmured My Lady, her eyes all aglow with what she was witnessing. Ummm... OK.

At first the pups wandered into this world about an hour apart. One at 3, one at 4, then 5AM. At 5:30, she turned on the machine-gun! We had of course toyed with betting on the number that she might throw, this her first pregnancy. While the Missuz was settled on four, I leaned towards five... We were both quite mistaken!
By 6:45 there were 7, and now it looked like things were settling down. Literally Dog-Tired, I finally did get Asuilu to move, and settled all down in the spot they were supposed to meet the world in. Sheets stripped, and all into the big wash basin downstairs. Likely a futile effort I recall thinking. Wash down the bed, restore clean bedding, and check on Mama and the Pups. All well, all settled in. Good, Gave it half an hour, and then hit the rack for a few desperately need hours. Less than half an hour later, the Missuz wakes me to inform that pup Number Eight has made an appearance, and that she believes that is it. Good. Check the new addition. Fine shape. Back to the rack.

Waking just a short time ago, I checked (of course) again. All are well! Mama is certainly pleased with herself, and all the little wigglers are wresting for the most milk-laden boobs. COOL! :-D

A few pix I shot of the Happy Family:

Asuilu looking a tad worn out!

http://gallery.fishbc.com/albums/Ironnoggin/Puppies_1.jpg

The Kids:

http://gallery.fishbc.com/albums/Ironnoggin/Puppies_2.jpg

You can see that at this stage they appear to be a mix of both parents. Of course their colors will change over time, but interesting to see just how they originally appeared!

http://gallery.fishbc.com/albums/Ironnoggin/Puppies_3.jpg

They are certainly going to be interesting to watch develop! A rather Wild Mix in these ones, Asuilu is 1/2 Arctic Wolf, 1/4 German shepherd and 1/4 lab. Amaruq is 1/2 Timber Wolf, 1/2 Alaskan husky. Gonna be fairly good-sized methinks. And of course we very much hope they develop the same faithful and people-loving personalities that their parents display!

Fun Times around here, For Sure!

As there are so many, I will likely advertise seeking homes for my new little "pack" as they get old enough. Feel free to contact me if you might be interested...

Cheers,
Nog - Proud Grandpa!

shepard wolf husky. Kinda of a weird mix but hes an amazing dog. He actually caught a little trout in the river that day and ate it. He will bury our fish in the dirt and then when we go to take it out, he gets mad at us! haha it hilarious. Also, if we dont watch out what we do with grouse after we have killed them, he will stow them away in a hole and go eat them at a later time. Never have had a dog with such an attitude as this one. Not that its a bad thing, but different none the less

The "Hamsters" are growing like Weeds! Incredible how fast they do that at this age! http://fishbcforum.com/public/style_emoticons/default/WOW.gif
Poor Ma is getting just a tad be-draggled!
All are VERY healthy, and appear to be thriving on the mix of 1/2 ground moose (sometimes deer) and puppy chow Mama is wolfing back!

A pix from day 5:

http://gallery.fishbc.com/albums/Ironnoggin/Pups_Day_5.jpg

And I actually got Amaruq to stand still for a split-second! First half-decent photo of him in Months!

http://gallery.fishbc.com/albums/Ironnoggin/Amaruq_11_months_4.jpg

Starting to see some Real definition! HUGE chest, and actually quite wide through the back and back end! Coming along more than nicely, and a fantastic disposition to boot!

He definitely has The Look down!

http://gallery.fishbc.com/albums/Ironnoggin/Amaruq_11_months_2.jpg

He had his first nervous and quick look at his kids yesterday, then bolted away swiftly! Smart Papa! http://fishbcforum.com/public/style_emoticons/default/sly.gif

So, life continues to be Fun around here! Hoping the newest additions take a little more time before they start wandering about!

Papa (Amaruq) has definitely been showing off his capabilities! Saw his first close-in buck a night or two ago, INSTANTLY recognized PREY! Damn near tore the window out in an attempt to Git Eem! Gonna have to keep him leashed whenever there is the possibility of a deer encounter it seems! Looks like he will make a most excellent Blood Trailer!

And, just last night...
He was whining at the door last night (upstairs) so I let him out as usual. Didn't even get sat back down before one hell of a ROAR from the back yard. Never heard him speak his Battle Cry in such earnest before, but recognized instantly there must be a problem!

Ran to check just as a good sized black bear boar was clamoring over the fence with Amaruq chewing on his hind end! JuHeeSus! http://fishbcforum.com/public/style_emoticons/default/WOW.gif
Grabbed the heavy cop flashlight, and pounded out after them. The boar cleared the fence, then turned to face off on my Buddy at point blank range - but at least the chain link fence was now between them. While the bear growled, Amaruq's roars actually drowned that out, and he too squared off, showing absolutely no signs of backing down despite me yelling at him to do so. So, I simply charged them hard, now advising the bear to re-locate at the top of my lungs (not exactly those words http://fishbcforum.com/public/style_emoticons/default/sly.gif ). The boar held for a minute, now a little uncertain, then spun and ran down the coulee. Amaruq was incensed, and I thought for a second he was about to follow! Stayed on the bear with the mag light, he turned twice to again square off, but thought better of it and eventually beat a hasty retreat out of Dodge. After he did so, Boogs strutted around the yard, hair still up (Impressive) and rumbling deep in his chest. Obviously rather proud of himself for dealing with the problem at hand.

Never heard him sound off like that! A VERY deep growl, and an even deeper bark when he gets PO'd! Issuing from that overly-deep chest of his, he sounded like he was the size of a bear himself! Protective? Oh yeah!

I do not believe the bear would have turned had there been two of them, they almost never do. But it all happened so fast, and given Asuilu's state, I would simply not have risked letting her join Amaruq regardless. So, today I'll be scouring the last few of the apples still on the ground out there, removing the temptation as it were. And of course now we're running the big lights over the yard before we let either out. No more sign of the boar, but no way we're taking chances!

No Fear in that "little" Boy of mine whatsoever! And VERY much into protecting his "Pack" and territory! http://fishbcforum.com/public/style_emoticons/default/BEERCHUG.gif

Growing even FASTER now!! :-D

They can ALL get out of the tub at this point. So, the Big Move to the downstairs kitchen (immediate access to the back yard) will have to happen right shortly methinks. When I checked on them just a short time ago, one was already nuzzled up to Mama's food dish and checking out the grits! Twenty-two days seems just a little early, but hey, with their background, maybe not...

Had one of the Little Ladz out the other night. Time to meet Papa:

http://gallery.fishbc.com/albums/Ironnoggin/Boogs_Meets_Baby_2.jpg

Certainly does take after his Pa, down to the NO FEAR Attitude!!

http://gallery.fishbc.com/albums/Ironnoggin/Boogs_Meets_Baby_1.jpg

Amaruq is exceedingly gentle with his wee ones, and very much seems to understand they are his! Cool!

And life between Ma and Pa has returned to near "normal". She tolerates him well, no growling nor menacing any more. Guess she too figures it may well be time for a little help!!

And so the FUN continues...

Due to a couple of them toying with Asuilu's munchies, we decided to see just what they thought of trying on a bowl themselves. The results were downright HILARIOUS! Puts a whole new meaning to the term "Dog Pile"!!!

http://gallery.fishbc.com/albums/Ironnoggin/First_Feed_1.jpg

As you can see, most ended up with as much ON them (and the floor and everywhere else that is!) as in them!

http://gallery.fishbc.com/albums/Ironnoggin/First_Feed_2.jpg

Zapped that whole bowl in a matter of minutes! WOW!!!

Here's a short vid of the festivities...

http://gallery.fishbc.com/albums/Ironnoggin/IMGP0290.wmv

Realizing they simply would NOT stay in the pool any longer, and that weaning time has come along, we moved them downstairs yesterday. Thank The Goddess for Good Friends! Gathered up a puppy cage and two puppy feeders (helps a LOT with the dancing in the food routine!). All settled in well, and Asuilu relaxed even more! She's GOTTA be happy those sharp little teeth are being used to chow down puppy chow rather than being used on HER!!

Feeding time at the Zoo again:

Since the pups have been stealing nibbles of ma & pa's bones, we decided to see if they could tackle the real thing.

Pretty damn impressive for being just 5 weeks old (today)! Getting close to being completely weaned already, rather quick for this lot! Momma couldn't be much happier about that part! Those little needle teeth are BLOODY SHARP!!

Keeping them around another week to ensure their development is still going strong, then farming them out to their new homes. Will be in touch with those they have been promised to over this week to make the arrangements.
Still a couple left that are looking btw, so drop me a line if you are at all interested...

Will try for some outdoor footage if the weather cooperates soon!
Love them all, but the Missuz says NO WAY to housing an entire Pack! And since I can't get a Mastodon Tag, guess I'll have to agree.

Going to have to cram a LOT of FUN into this next week methinks!

Hey Nog,

Are you sending these puppies to their new homes at 6 weeks old?

Really??? Did I read that right???

Cute babies :)

IronNoggin
11-15-2010, 02:18 PM
Hey Nog,
Are you sending these puppies to their new homes at 6 weeks old?

Yes, Some will be. ONLY to folks with experience that I KNOW can handle them young. This will of course be a gradual process, with the most advanced wandering off early, and those that require a little more looking after sticking around a spell. Several reasons...

The period from right about 6.5 weeks through 12 weeks is known as the "Socialization Period".
Quoting here: " It is at this age that rapid learning occurs. At seven weeks, puppies can learn and what they learn will have a lasting impact. Everything he comes in contact with will make a lasting impression upon him as it never will again. Not only will he learn, but, he will learn whether he is taught or not. Though he has a short attention span, what things he learns are learned permanently and resistant to change. Therefore, owners need to be careful about what their puppies are learning at this time. Your puppy is very anxious to learn how you want him to behave and react, and he needs to be shown what is expected of him in his new role as your pet. There are rules you will expect your puppy to obey. Establish those rules NOW while behaviors are easy to establish."

It is also at this period that Hybrids like these form a permanent and lasting BOND with their new "Pack". Some of course will be ahead in the game, others just a tad slower. They have been basically weaned well over a week at this point (chiefly through the 4th week), and are getting ready to assume their new roles with the households they will belong to for the rest of their lives. Thus it is time for those new households to begin the direction of development they so desire.

And, the Mother should never be exposed to losing ALL of her Kiddies at once! Way to traumatic! So, best to slowly send them to their new homes over an extended period of time. Keeps the pups Happy, keeps Mama Happy.

Actually acquired Amaruq at 5 weeks - he is none the worse for wear although I wouldn't suggest everyone do the same. I have done this successfully on more than a few occasions, but you have to know exactly what you are up to. Thus the first from this clan marching out to only those that share such capabilities.

Gotta run, feeding and play time now over for a few hours, and a Big Buck calling my name...

Cheers,
Nog

Bertha found her new home last night. Going to an acreage with a gentle older female to help her learn the ropes. Largest of the females, she will both be large as well as a "Looker". Methinks she will be one happy puppy there!

http://gallery.fishbc.com/albums/Ironnoggin/Bertha_2.jpg

Cheers "Bertha"! http://fishbcforum.com/public/style_emoticons/default/BEERCHUG.gif

Leaves one Gal still to find her Pack. Peter was named that due to her extreme friendliness with my neighbor (who happened to be named Peter). Her nick-name started as a joke, but somehow stuck. Methinks she will end up with another handle down the road.

This one is almost overly friendly, seriously LOVES people, and doesn't have an aggressive bone in her body. She will of course be territorial (as most of these females are) but will show a reluctance to straying as a consequence. She would benefit from a family with children for her to play and eventually watch over...

Then we have The Lads. One of these is spoken for, but it is taking that Family some time to make up their minds! LOL!

First up is "Al". Named so for Al Capone, he is THE Dominant pup of this litter, and the Largest. He is somewhat aggressive and a tad rough with the others as most Dominants are. Will be rather Big when full grown. With proper training and nurturing he will develop into a fine Companion and Watch Animal. I expect that will require good and consistent training to accomplish, and am being VERY selective as to who gets him as a consequence.

http://gallery.fishbc.com/albums/Ironnoggin/Al_3.jpg

Next we have "Double Dot". Easy to understand why when you see the matching dots on either side of his muzzle. He is outgoing and friendly, sits in the middle of litter dominance alongside "Nobody" and "Zorro". Very much likes snuggles and pets, methinks he would do right fine for a family with children and/or other pets.

http://gallery.fishbc.com/albums/Ironnoggin/DoubleDot_5.jpg

"Nobody" was named for the star (Trinity) of the movie My Name Is Nobody. A clown at heart, he loves to show off and has a real "prance" to his step. Going to be one proud puppy, guess he inherited his Prince like attitude from his Princess of a mother! Another that will be fine with kids and/or other pets.

And last but by no means least, we have "Zorro". He was originally named for his mask, although that has faded somewhat as he has developed. He will be a real Looker, and knows it! Extremely friendly with people, he craves attention, always desiring a scritch or belly rub as he sighs contentedly while that happens. Likely amongst the best for a family with children. And will likely tend more towards his mother's size rather than his fathers.

And that's the ones still looking. As noted, one of these Ladz will be departing soon. The others will be advertised locally today (they have not been to date) and we are hoping to find each one of them a Very happy and friendly environment for them to grow up with. http://fishbcforum.com/public/style_emoticons/default/wub.gif

More pix/descriptions available on request. Located in Port Alberni, but can travel...

The little fellow we have been calling Little Joe (due to his new Dad being named Joe of course) wandered off today.
He was one of my favorites, and I were to have kept one, it would have been between him and "Eight of Ten"
New name is Nyka - believe I got that right...

Always good when they go to Buddies, we will get to watch this one develop over time and that is sincerely Appreciated!!
And helps a bunch with the melancholy that comes when they leave us...

Best of Luck together Joe & Nyka! http://fishbcforum.com/public/style_emoticons/default/BEERCHUG.gif

I'll hand it too you...you are doing a FABULOUS job of marketing this litter.

The other threads I've seen of mixed breed dogs for sale on this forum would have been moved to the For Sale Other section long ago.

Not only has it not been removed you've kept it at the top of the Hunting Dogs section for a couple months now.

My hat is off to you.

Why Thanks Kasomor. Didn't really start off as marketing, simply wanted to share the Fun times around here when they happened along. And what a bloody surprise! TEN! Whoosh!

Been a hell of a fun ride with these little buggers, and our Pack has thoroughly enjoyed this time together! But we simply cannot keep any more than two, and I ain't about to part with the Parents for anything!

These pups will make Great Companions, Hunters, Blood Trailers and effective Protection Animals (when trained correctly). And most of them would make great Family Pets as well - they really do LOVE people! That of course is why I posted here. The thread slowly evolved into an ad I suppose now. Wasn't the original intent, just sorta strayed that way when we realized we would have a few looking for good homes.

Have another wandering over to Alberta soon now it appears - confirmation tonight. Hope to place them with Good Folks, and we feel that most here obviously fit that category.

Of course should the Mods feel I have overstepped the bounds by running this here, it can be moved to a more suitable location. And I hope we haven't P'd off any members here by the frequent updates!!

Still a couple huntin' new Packs. Be nice if they went to Folks with an outdoor orientation...

Cheers,
Matt

Unbelievable! Ran an ad up around town, and hit the usual Online Suspects for the same. Kijiiji and Craigslist BOTH deleted the ads, suggesting that Wolf Hybrids were either "Prohibited for sale and/or ownership" in areas of BC and/or considered "Dangerous Animals"! What a crock of Chit! I wrote both of them back demanding an explanation, and of course they haven't even bothered to reply. Talk about OVER-REACTION! I guess some fools out there still believe in the Little Red Riding Hood and Big Bad Wolf stories their parents used to frighten them with!! http://fishbcforum.com/public/style_emoticons/default/rolleyes.gif

While these hybrids are obviously not for everyone, they certainly are NOT prohibited anywhere in BC. My Missuz and I have been living with and raising Wolf Hybrids for over 30 years now. We have successfully placed our pups with many many Families, a LOT with children, and a LOT with other existing pets. To date there has NEVER been an issue with any of those we have placed. In fact, the vast majority of people that welcome them into their lives have provided comments such as: Best dog we've ever had, smartest dog we've ever had, excellent with the kids, great family oriented dog, even loves the cat and so on.

For these two advertising firms to suggest what they have has Really got me going! Complete and utter nonsense being spewed by ignorant fear-mongers!
There is far greater potential for problems with an awful lot of the other breeds they do list!

I guess while it surprises me, perhaps it shouldn't. There apparently exist a whole host of people who are uninformed and choose to wear that on their sleeve to the point of ignorance. http://fishbcforum.com/public/style_emoticons/default/wacko.gif

Rant Off. Still ticked, but feels a little better to offload...

Have another Local Lad coming by tonight. He's wanted one of ours for quite some time now, and will likely choose his new Companion when he visits. And yes, he has a Family, kids and all. I have no concerns regarding that type of placement whatsoever, except for anything that tries to fool with those kids one the bonding has been established! http://fishbcforum.com/public/style_emoticons/default/sly.gif

Couple left to go now folks...

ugh. i can totally sympathise. because my dog is short haired and muscular, everyone assume's she's vicous and dangerous. she's accutally a complete mushpot, loves everyone big and small, and has put up with all sorts of abuse from my three neices (all under the age of 6, she's been around them since birth) with nothing more than a tail wag.

unfortunately, because of peoples uneducated misconceptions, i've come to the conclusion that you just can't cure stupid.

glad you've found such great homes for all your pups over the years. that litter is seriously cute! :-D

So two more of our Little Clan have left the nest. Sad to see them off, but darn Happy about the excellent homes they are going to!!

Dave came all the way out from Alberta to meet "Peter". It was Love at first Sight! So Maya (her new name, pretty and fitting methinks) is off to 3 acres and 3 kids to grow up with! Very Cool! And we wish her and her new Pack all the very best!!

Dave & Maya:

Then today a Fellow who has a good sized farm just out of town dropped by. Heard about the pups from my neighbor, and wanted to see for himself. He and "Nobody" were an instant hit! Of course that little clown could capture damn near anyone's heart with his antics! So our little Nobody is off to the farm, where he is destined to herd chickens, geese and turkeys for a living. Gonna be some FUN methinks!

Jim & Nobody:

Still holding a couple for buddies, which leaves but a couple to find Packs for now. Papa (Amaruq) certainly is enjoying his time with the wee ones (well, not quite so wee now LOL!) Here he is enjoying a good old-fashioned DOGPILE:

Getting down to the wire now Folks! Still searching for a couple homes though...

"Al" is now on hold for an excellent family down in Victoria.
"Zorro" fled the nest this very afternoon - wandering his was over to a beautiful Malamute Gal and her People Pack.

"Big Bertha" has been spoken for almost since she was born, however I have not heard back from the fellow in a while. Going to try and contact him to determine if he still wants her. Surprising amount of interest in the gals!

That leaves but Double Dot (who does have a fellow hovering...) and Eight of Ten.

Eight of Ten has NOT been advertised. He is amongst the very best looking of the bunch, and we simply want him to be placed to either a buddy or at least locally as we very much want to watch him grow up.

And on it goes...

So... we thought we had them all placed. We've been holding (Baby-sitting) three for a couple of Families. One being delivered tomorrow to Victoria, another up to CR shortly now. The third older couple phoned last night to inform us that they "simply are not ready for a puppy at this point in their lives". WTF? They phoned many many times to ensure we would hold Her for them over the course of three weeks, and now this? Some People! http://fishbcforum.com/public/style_emoticons/default/blink.gif

So now we have one Little Girl left looking for a home. If interested, please drop me a line asap!

Hoping Here... http://fishbcforum.com/public/style_emoticons/default/unsure.gif
