Well, no Elk for me this year...but not for lack of seeing them. Apparently I just can't shoot very straight.
The most important lessons i learned on this trip about Elk Hunting:

1. A bull will always send his cows in first (to get shot) when you call him
2. He will make it very difficult to count to 6 points (darkness, moving)
3. Elk are not quiet when moving through the bush-try not to get trampled.
4. When it's Hot, Elk are in the grassy timber
5. Bulls know how to bugle quietly-you just gotta be in range to hear 'em!

Mulies on the other hand are much easier to shoot

Guaranteed a couple of these 2 points are now hanging in someones garage...I had to throw rocks at a couple of the dumbasses to get them to leave me the hell alone!

saw 2 sixes(for sure), and a bunch of I dunnos. shot at one running at 75-80 yards -clean miss. gotta wonder how you miss a car sized animal at that distance. that was the second day.
had a couple in the scope at 150 yards but couldn't make out how many points before darkness...and i sprayed dirt all over one at 400 yards:roll:
Back to the range.
Anyone know how to practice moving shots???

Ah tough luck and 2 unideal shots but yeah i suppose the range will help :D. Glad you seen something, i was in the same predicament we hunted all weekend and my friends missed the first 6 they have ever seen... Take the 30-06 to the trap and skeet club and show them how it`s done :)

Shooting at running animals is a very low percentage business at best.

:???:Shooting at animals at long ranges (over 200 yards) is also a very low percentage thing to attempt - unless you have lots of practice under your belt.

I'd most likely pass on a running animal unless I was shooting with a camera.

I don't usually shoot at anything over 300. I just misjudged the distance-thought he was at around 310-320, but after I missed and tracked it by gPS, I found out it was around 420. I'm thinkin the size of the animal threw me off? Usually only hunt deer.
Might haveta go practice on some immi moose:mrgreen:

You get a buddy to roll a tire down a hill whiel you shoot at it. Put plywood on the side of the tire so you can see if you hit it.

The size of the animal can sure do that to a guy. Even in 3D shooting it happens. A big ol' foam elk set out at 37 yards can seem like he's just 25 yards away.

Shooting at a rolling tire with plywood inside is a good idea. Draw a killzone sized circle or darken a spot so that you can see if you would be getting a kill-shot.
