I`m pretty sure the moon affects you Jel.
That`s where the word "LUNATIC" comes from.

Do you mean mid week or mid night? Isn't that what they mean by phases of the moon?

Hunt early morning or later at night more so than mid-morning or afternoon due to the deer feeding all night when its a clear night on a full moon. I don't really bother to hunt when there is nights like this as I have noticed everything is already bedded down sooner than I can find them in the mornings and come out later in the night to feed. Especially after they get use to the hunting pressure.

Can I blame you if I don't?

Hunted the so called perfect window last year and I would say I saw a lot more game the previous year during a full moon. There's more at play than just the lunar cycle here Jel ... but I guess if it gets everybody out hunting before I go then...Ya what he says.

Jelly, whats the skinny on the lunar calendar? Do you use one to guide your Loonie tactics or strictly gage it from the back porch and make a decision the night before based on the natural phenom's around your hunting area? Intel, wisdom, whiskers, moss, I need more..... Good thread Jelly, keep it going....Chinook want big buck...again!!

Well Jelly, if this is the low point in your Looner theory it is fast becoming my sad reality. I was out at first light this morning with a slim crescent moon. +1deg, still air, crystal clear. Spooked up 5 does together all day long. Hunted long and hard on cut edges, timber, ravines etc... and nothing. Tons of sign, some fresh, some not so but no tracks that came to an end on the heels of a booner. I buy into the theory that the moon plays a part but jezuz man, surely the moon doest make them dissappear....or does it??? Where'd they go??? I usually see 15 or 20 deer in the area I was working over today but today yielded sweet FA!! Next day the wife gives me a permit is Friday the 8th, the start of your prime time. Its on!!

Well I am trying to take some time off of work to extend the long weekend for this good opportunity. I hope your right Jelvis because I am buying into it. Went out last weekend on a clear morning with a bit of a moon and didn't see much. Infact it was the slowest day of the season so far for me.

Humbug, just get out there when you can and hunt hard. Animals just don't disappear when the moon is at a certain spot in it's cycle...

Mind you a full moon does make it easier to hunt at night when permitted...

Sorry Jel-shot my biggest buck to date on a full moon. I'm more inclined to follow the weather and shortening daylight hours than the moon phases.

Bucks don't disappear, but moon phases will affect chances of success due to changing behaviour...Jel is right!

Interesting stuff Jel. You saying this is Muley Rut time in your woods? The end of that stretch should be Whitey rut as best I can tell.

Can't remember why now, but I thought Muley rut was into Nov. when it's cold, dark and snowing and that just before that time they'd have migrated into steep (well ... Steeper) and dark timbered wintering grounds.

Since taking up bow hunting during the first week of September, well before the rut. I've found the very bright fullish moon phase frustrating, especially if the weather is very hot. Only does and spikes seem to wander about during legal hunting time. About the only time I see mature bucks during this early season full moon phase is if it is a crispy cool morning, or if they are moving from one bedding area to another around noon time. Unless it has been raining enough to soften the ground foliage, it is very difficult to stalk into these bedding areas successfully. Most of my successes on good bucks during early September have been during rainy, cloudy, or less than half full moons. This past week is a good example. I spent several days in a couple of my normally good areas without spotting a mature buck, only seeing does and spikes, even though I saw plenty of fresh tracks. It was a very bright full moon phase, and it was very hot.
