Well Buddy picked up our Bison Hides (hair on ) today from the Tanner in Vancouver.
These were from Bison we harvested last Dec on LEH near Pink mountain.

Before the hunt I was hoping for an average to large Bull, checked the price out before leaving and was shocked. A shoulder mount Bull any where from 1600 to 2500 bucks. So besides hanging something the size of a Volkswagon on my walls and the cost I decided it was not in the cards.

Buddy and I each took a Cow Bison (great eating by the way) one likely a 2 or 3 year old the other 5 or 6 we thought. We were told they made beautiful rugs before we left on the hunt and when we harvested them, we were helped by our hunting partners to take them off in one piece. That is what we did. We salted them when we got home and took them to the tanner. Our expectations were met, they are both soft, quite a size (can't imagine a big bull likely 6x8 feet), wonderful shades of brown, mine is going to look great in my rec. room along with my sheep, goat, deer, elk game bird mounts. An awesome addition to my Man Cave !

Get er done boyz if you have an LEH, you will not be disappointed if you prep them right.

Last year I put my hands on a young bison hide and that was all it took to convince me that the family would appreciate it . . . plus the meat aint bad either! Just have to get an LEH and make it happen.

We had ours done at Pacific Fur dressers Vancouver.

18 bucks a square ft, hair on, looks great, brushed out well, soft, smells like leather, no bad odor.

No pic's yet besides, I'm horrible on the comp.

You won't be disappointed if they are late tags you have. Our hunt was Dec.1 to 15/09

The big bulls are about 6x8 feet, more mane on them, the softer hair is on the sides, ours are about 37 sq.ft. and 43 sq. ft.

Very cool to have without the Volkswagon on the wall, hahah, leaves more room for sheep, bucks and billies!

Looks to me they were roughly 6x6 and 6x7?

Gate,
pmj got it about right, they are barrel shapped critters, the smaller one is just over 6x6, as said before about the sq. foot measure.
Now ........ to get my Pocohontas on it ....... the black bear hides are kind of rougher.

6x6 should cover most of a king size bed.

How does this differentiate from taking a hide to a taxidermist? I got a price list from a taxi today and it was $200-$250 per foot to get a goat hide done. 18 bucks a sq ft sounds allot better. Is it the same thing?

There are Taxidermists that use this very same tannery.
You need to ask your Taxi, how does he price it out?

As said earlier .... a 6x6 rug = 36 sq. ft. x 18 = $648.00

Not cheap by any means but very impressed with the job. The later the season the nicer the rug.

I've used this tanner for years and years, never had any issue.

so for an equal comparison
a 6 foot hide x $230/ft = $1380
$1380- $648 = $732 in savings

sounds pretty cheap to me

I am guessing the taxidermist must sew the tanned hide to a felt liner to make a border and is charging extra for this - quite a bit extra. The tanned hide from a fur dresser / tannery would be just the hide and hair with no felt when finished and returned.
